It’s My Opinion That This Spurs Gaffer Is Just A Doomed As The Previous Ones

By The Boy -

The arrival of Nuno Spirito Santo has been the sort of prolonged labour one would wish upon any living creature, 70 plus days of hot water, towels and occasional blood-curdling screams.

To be clear, I take exception to anyone instructing me to ‘get behind’ anything. Also, it’s nothing personal, I am sure Nuno is a terribly nice chap.

The issues centre wholly around repairing the pre-existing damage inflicted by the club upon itself, and nothing else.

There is little money, and the devaluation of the existing personnel only serves to compound the sense of being cut adrift that envelopes Spurs. The suggestion that merely a new voice can somehow charm and coax meaningful improvement from a squad that has already watched the demise of two well-respected managers is fanciful.

Another element of discussion I’d like to summarily ignore is the optimistic chitter-chatter about Nuno having brought Wolves up and having done well, and then having been undone by injuries. The cold truth is, I don’t care. Think of the film The Fugitive, where seemingly trapped between a US Marshall with a gun and a leap into a probable certain death waterfall, Harrison Ford says defiantly, ‘I didn’t kill my wife’, Tommy Lee Jones bluntly replies, ‘I – don’t – care.’

That’s me with the gun, and those of you comparing apples with oranges, you’re the ones about to have a bath.

Who coaches Tottenham is entirely academic, and I am tired of all of this, all the faux optimism and empty good intentions. Can Nuno make Dele Alli live up to the hype? Can Nuno teach Eric Dier how to make better decisions? Will Nuno influence the transfer strategy at Tottenham? The answer to these and most other questions have already been decided long before today.

I wish Nuno well, but without any futile attempt at optimism. I wish him well in a ‘mind how you go’ sort of way. If the Portuguese delivers results that are better than well, then an invitation to the Magic Circle is guaranteed.

Lastly, I beg not to be kept updated about anyone feels. Winning is the one and only metric, and to all counterarguments, I would respectfully ask that Tommy Lee Jones’ wise words above are applied.

What you can see in front of you is wool.

If winning was a the only metric that mattered Mourinho would have been given another week on the job.
Don’t be fooled.
If he had been given one more week he would have had a good chance have become our joint-most successful manager in 30 odd years.

Optimistic about what? An ownership axis (ENIC) that is committed to not investing enough in the playing squad to actually win anything? That eschews the hiring of a world class manager like Conte, who actually garners trophies like confetti, in favour of an amiable, cut-price, journeyman, like Nuno, who will parrot anodyne ENIC/Levyesque platitudes about ‘the Tottenham way’ and ‘the club’s DNA’ and be happy to ‘toe the company line’, whilst we spin our wheels for the next couple of years and win precisely nothing?

Listen pal, I could don saffron robes, grab a handful of beads and whip myself into a beatific frenzy of exultation marching down Tottenham Court Rd, with the Hari Krishnas, but it ain’t going to change ENIC’s modus operandae one iota! Levy will continue to plead poverty, fraudulently declaim that ‘we are in a different project’ to the other ‘top 10’ clubs in world football (that actually try to win trophies) and allow the playing side of the club to stagnate whilst conniving at an exit strategy that will enable himself and Lewis to embellish their own personal fortunes, with a final billion pound ‘pay off’, at the expense of THFC and the club’s fanbase.

Spurs and Celtic are to be congratulated on their efforts to obtain the services of Grealish and McGinn respectively. Could have got them for a comparative song and, apart from improving their sides, made a tidy profit if and when they moved on (a probability in McGinn’s case but a possibility in the case of Grealish, as well)

Agree with you on some of whats said, it is “Deja Vu” with this guy. Not his fault but a reminder to all Spurs fans that keep thinking the bright lights of a fancy stadium & beaming training facilities is the road to our success. It aint! Levys soul goal is maximise value. Now he’s defecated on his own doorstep he will scramble to get that lost value and then rub his hands together knowing he is back on track, yet pitch side we will and always have been also rans at best

Agreed. I already know it. Funny how the Prem used to frown upon dual/multiple ownership. ENIC had to swerve Rangers, Prague, Athens and Vicenza (who they ruined) to get their hands on Spurs. What City have in North America, Asia and beyond is designed to rake in the money so they remain at the top of the financial tree. Red Bull have also plenty to say using this model.

I was just stating facts on the local level. My mate’s lad scouted at 5 years old to join a Man Utd satellite centre when he should be with Barnsley, the town where he was born and bred. Mason Greenwood is from Halifax but Utd grabbed him in the same way. In the old days he would have signed for Halifax and they could have got some money selling him on helping them sustain as a club.

There is a myth that academies provide better coaching than the old models, but there was never a lack of talent. Lads grew up playing football on the streets, the cream always rose to the top. Sport Science, technology, pitches are all better for these kids but I am not sure we are producing better footballers. The notion that academy football is a good thing is nonsense. It is a business, that is it.

I predict a new manager bounce for a while, and then a slow decline back to where we started as the novelty wears off. The squad is stale and badly needs refreshing, until that happens there won’t be any long term improvement. When the slump once again kicks in is when Levy normally sacks the manager, despite of course failing to support him in the transfer market. It will be interesting to see whether he can get away with it again. Surely this cycle has got to stop sometime?

Sadly for Spurs fans, Nuno is hardly an inspirational choice. As one or two other contributors posted below, he was available two months ago, so if Levy really rated him, why wasn’t he appointed earlier? We all know the answer to that, he was never first choice. So where does this leave us? Without any money and trying to sell deadwood at give away prices to buy new players which given our track record under the master negotiator Levy is not very hopeful. For those of you who think that anything has really changed with the appointments of Paratici and Nuno, they are likely to be disappointed. Who knows how much we will get for Kane or how much of that money will go on players rather than paying down debt? One thing is certain is that Kane is off and I wish him well because I am sure that these appointments will only seem to him to be rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.Back to Groundhog Day at Spurs which will continue until Gollum has gone.

(Er, is that enough as there’s plenty more sold/moved on to other EFL clubs!?)
Most of those, whether deserved or not, have played for their National team (@ u.17-21’s or full) by the way.

Given this is now manager # 15 when did your editorial above take on reality? I for one have put aside logic and the experience of Spurs under Levy for about 12 of the previous gaffers and hoped for the best. Not sure I believe anything anymore involved with ENIC.

Legoverlass

He is clearly not the candidate that was originally wanted as he has been available from the very beginning of this farce. So once again Levy and ENIC have dragged the club towards mid table insignificance and my guess is that Levy wants to slide back into the shadows and focus on how he can rinse the client reference numbers and build up non football related activities at the new stadium. Sadly as long as these owners remain I have lost interest and that may be significant if I am representative of other generational supporters who have lost that unconditional support for the club.

What sets City apart from Spurs (beyond the obvious spending) is that they have a network of feeder and development clubs under the City Football Group umbrella. Have a look at the CFG structure to see how a professional organization is run and funded by SWFs like ADIA and CITIC and US hedge funds.

Not flukes. Tap ins. He’s just hangs about and profits from quality around him. Did it with Sturridge and Suarez, doing it at City with their endless supply. Pep didn’t even fancy him last year. Have you seen who those goal were against too? England have played dross largely for 2 years.
Wouldn’t mind but in this tournament it’s clearly disengenuous. He’s been set up to star. All to do with the off the pitch stuff.

Agreed. The purpose of the academies is to make money by selling lads on to clubs who take them on loan. If they can get a first team player then that is a bonus. Man City have had one in 10 years, but yet they make between £50-100m per season selling on lads we have never heard of. Their methods, indeed all the top clubs methods are borderline corrupt. Sancho was ‘stolen’ off Watford, but yet City made approx £9.5m profit for 2 years coaching and possibly have a percentage of the Man Utd fee to Dortmund. Watford deserved better, but what does that mean? It is a con but parents are guilted in to the ‘dream’ that awaits and some get payments and their kids in private education. Chelsea do it in the South, taking players from all over (Gilmour from Scotland, Mount is from Hampshire). Getting European lads is beyond a joke, but it helps generate income. Spurs’ academy used to do ok, selling the likes of Caulker, Livermore, Bentaleb, Mason, Townsend. Players like that help a club buy better players, but it has been on the wane for some time. Getting the top youngsters is difficult, keeping them is harder. Brentford had to pack in and Spurs will struggle to compete with Utd, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. That being said, there are more than enough lads out there and Spurs should be doing better. Spurs’ scouting network must be woeful otherwise we would have lads pushing for games other than Skipp.

I’m no pundit but playing a CAM like Grealish, Foden or Mount that can get Harry the ball occasionally would seem to be at the top of my To Do lists. It really shows how dreadful Germany are that City was able to beat Chelsea the other day.

Yup. The media love Sterling. He can do no wrong. I don’t see the same things as they see that is for sure. Danny Mills tried saying Sterling created the chance for Kane at the end of 1st half. We at Spurs over the last decade or so are used to no trophies but still dream, with this we expect entertaining football to make up for the lack of titles and trophies, would rather see the game played with style rather than negative play and still win sweet FA, as it costs an arm and a leg to travel and see the boys on a day out. Give Nuno a chance , he got Wolves into the EPL and made them an exciting team to watch without a huge budget.

StuSpur

Unfortunately Levy and his complete lack of understanding in matters related to football is going be a shadow hanging over Nuno.
He believes the squad is simply in need of a new voice and some new motivation and it will magically return to how it was performing 4yrs ago.

A squad needs churn. Alex Ferguson testified to this many years ago. New faces brings new motivation, new competition and keeps players on their toes.
This concept horrifies levy because it requires a commitment to renew, invest – have faith in a manager.

To have faith in a manager requires trust and a relinquishment of control and it’s the control that levy simply can’t let go of.

Now if we had an academy that was pumping out regular talent then that may be a viable option to fill some of that churn but we don’t. I don’t care how shiny and state of the art it is. It has produced NOBODY in 20yrs and in fact should be held up and scrutinised for its own failures separately.

What I find odd is how a large majority of Spurs fans haven’t realised this appointment could’ve been made two months ago. Of course it wasn’t because Nuno was never on the list of prospective new manager/ first team coach.

This stinks of a large ditch attempt to get someone, anyone to manage a football team because the intelligent out there saw it for what it is. The two year contract says it all.

Yes. That’s the size of it. I’m sure Nuno is a “lovely guy” as Bulla says, but Nuno represents another betrayal. The Betrayals alot on here warned about for a long time. Not him personally, the idea of a manager of his level being passed of as satisfactory after what Levy has wibbled about for years.

It’s another con. H, you said youre not interested in feelings…..but I feel for poor Nuno….😖

CowSpurs
CowSpurs

I am at pains to agree. Having lost complete interest in the managerial merry-go-round, the mere fact that we have now appointed one, only means one thing. Spurs are one day closer to sacking him without any fault of his own. From what I have seen and heard of Nuno from TV and Wolves fans he is a good coach and a great man manager. With all that said and done will he turn Sissoko in to a player? I’m still laughing at his volley in the Switzerland game. Will he make Dier into Coady, Winks in to Moutinho or Bergwijn into Traore? I think there lies the answer.

Unless the penny pinching, micromanaging charlatan that is Levy is ousted by King Joe or he suffers a bang to the head and realises that a CEO of a football club is supposed to back the football operations that exist within it, I cannot see success coming. Poch inherited a damn good squad with lots of potential. What has this current crop got? Definitely not the aptitude, skill or determination to sustain high end performances week in week out. I felt sorry for Son and Harry, then I realised they are multi-millionaires who can rest easy. So what if they didn’t win anything, their lives and the children’s children’s lives are sorted. Same with Levy and Lewis. It is us fans that have to plod on. We are the losers in all of this. Living through the dross of the 90s after having some success in the 80s. Now, having stumbled on to a decent business plan (buy young talent) and getting a manager who could punch well above his weight we are in limbo, waiting for something to happen.

This is a long road, I’m not planning on going anywhere, but my desire is waning. I have loved Spurs for 42 years of my life but am getting sick and tired of it. I don’t want to be a West Ham fan, pumped up for one or two games a season and thinking a 3-3 away draw is a good result. I don’t want to be a Palace fan who have won nothing and never will. I want the glory days back every season, fighting for cups and the top league positions. This isn’t too much to ask for, we did it in the 60s, won cups in the 70s, did it in the 80s and had a good spell under Poch. I just want to compete. Chelsea have had 20 years of success and they deserve nothing if their history is anything to go by. Same with City. Football shouldn’t be about bitterness, but I am welling with it and about to explode. I bought a Spurs face mask, the first bit of merch I have bought since the 90s and I resent my actions because Levy will spaff that £6 and everyone else’s up the wall on some N’umpty footballer. I am not done yet with Spurs, but I soon may be. I want this appointment to be a NuYes, not a Nunonononono! Over to you Levy and Paratici.

I like Nuno, he conducts himself respectfully in interviews etc. Is he the answer? Who knows but he will have my backing. Paratici…. impress us please!

I agree with all of this! Nuno reminds me of that little boy at half time, who if he can score from the pen spot against a pro goalie, will win whatever the big shiny prize is… “yeah I’ll give it a go, nothing to lose!”
The odds are firmly stacked against him.
All this disingenuous nonsense from Levy, Paratici and the Spurs Official Twitter account is aimed at those poor souls who say to their serially cheating partners, “ok one last chance! We can make this work!” It’s so see through, doesn’t stand up to scrutiny and is utterly cringeworthy. A 2 year contract says it all.
I’ll admit I was vocal in my anti-Jose sentiment and I do think with him it was a case of flogging a dead horse but if I had been able to see then, where we are now, I may have reigned it in a little.
If ever it was possible to see the future, now is that time. You can almost read the Chairman’s Christmas message in your head now! Words such as: familiarisation, unfortunate, unexpected, pandemic impact, determined and project would be there in abundance! While we are sitting 10th / 11th, still conceding, playing sideways and backwards and Winks telling us in post match interviews how the lads are determined to turn it around while stroking his hair sideways. With the official Twitter account proudly announcing our new official athlete’s foot partner.

Spurs is a step up from Wolves and Nuno is willing to accept the financial constraints enforced upon him for the opportunity of working at a “big-6” club; his options outside of Spurs seemed limited. I guess his hope is that he can pull off a Pochetino and exceed expectation to make top 4. If he does, his stock will rise, and he can then pursue a more ambitious club where he will be backed to consistently challenge for silverware.

So you have a 4 star hotel and you spend a lot of money refurbishing because you want to turn it into a 5 star hotel. Following the refurb you appoint a new manager who only has experience of running 3 star hotels in the hope that he can get you that 5 star rating.

That is the business decision the board have just made.

This is probably Levy’s payback for everyone demanding ENIC out. I mean, who is going to buy the club if we drop a division?

Nuno’s probably not a bad manager but it’s surely ironic that we’ve just appointed another Portuguese manager when we’ve just sacked the most famous and most conspicuously successful manager ever from that country. Oh well, we do things differently at Tottenham!
