Tottenham Hotspur could look to improve their defensive options at the end of the season.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has now confirmed to Football London that he could look to bring in another central defender despite signing three defenders this season.
Tottenham signed Micky van de Ven and Ashley Phillips at the start of the season. Van de Ven made an instant impact in the Premier League and he has established himself as a key player for Tottenham. Meanwhile, Phillips is a long-term prospect and he is expected to be an important first-team player in the coming seasons.
Tottenham followed that up with the signing of Radu Dragusin during the January transfer window. It seems that the North London outfit are not done yet.
Postecoglou has confirmed that the central defence is an area they are looking to strengthen further.
“If you’re saying ‘is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at,” he said. “With all these things it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.
“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That’s planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”
Tottenham have been linked with a number of defenders in recent weeks including Willian Pacho and Koki Machida. It will be interesting to see who they end up signing.
There is no doubt doubt that they need four quality central defenders in order to go through an entire season and compete across multiple fronts. They already have three reliable central defenders at their disposal, and it is no surprise that they are keen on another. The arrival of another defender would allow Postecoglou to rotate players like Cristian Romero and Van de Ven better.
