Former Tottenham Hotspur player Jurgen Klinsmann has now highlighted a major weakness in the North London club’s game and they will need to sort it out if they want to have a successful season.
The German has revealed that Tottenham will need to fix their vulnerabilities when it comes to dealing with set pieces. They have conceded important goals in big games from set pieces and it remains to be seen whether Ange Postecoglou can cut the mistakes out of Tottenham’s game.
Klinsmann said to ESPN: “There’s obviously things you’ve got to fix. And the set pieces, especially corner kicks have been a problem for them last season.
“It’s now been a little problem and got to work on them. It’s an attitude issue, I don’t think it’s now necessarily a discussion of zonal or man-to-man marking or whatever or the goalkeeper should come out early.
“It needs to get fixed by the players; they need to make sure they’re spot on when the ball flies in the box.”
Tottenham recently crashed to defeat against Arsenal in the North London Derby and the Gunners scored from a corner.
Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has been criticised heavily for his vulnerabilities when it comes to set pieces as well. The Italian struggles to command his area and deal with aerial balls. He has struggled in that department consistently since joining the club last season. The Italian international will be fully aware of his weakness when it comes to set pieces and it remains to be seen whether he can work on his game and improve in that area.
Tottenham have a quality squad at their disposal and they will be expected to secure Champions League qualification this season. They will look to do well in the domestic cup competitions as well. If they continue to struggle when it comes to set pieces, teams will look to exploit their weaknesses more often than not.
