Is this Spurs Squad the most “Loyal” in the Premier League or the most Comfortable & Complacent?

For the last 12-18 months, there has been a lot of talk about the Tottenham squad being stale and in desperate need of refreshing.

But what if we flipped that argument for a second?

MORE: Craig Burley Savages Spurs Playing Style Under Jose [Video]

We have a group of players who stuck together for a five-year period without much, if any, talk of discontent or ambitions to move on, until this season at least. Even after the departures of Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose, previously two of our longest-serving players, this data shows that players stay longer at Spurs than they do at any other Premier League club.

An average stay of 49.3 months at the club – 10 more months than 18 teams in the division, shows that the club is providing an environment on and off the pitch where players want to spend the peak years of their careers.

Okay, that minute is up. So let’s flip the argument back.

Erik Lamela has been at Spurs 77 months, Eric Dier 65 months and Victor Wanyama 43 months. These are players who have been, and remain, dispensable to the squad that we have not been able to find buyers for.

Rose and Eriksen were part of that category before the January window.

The rebuild has started – for real this time – and must continue this summer.

Loyal is good. Comfortable and complacent is not.

Poch was loyal to players even when they didn’t perform and it cost him his job in the end. I think that’s what I was trying to say really. With Jose it’s simple, give your best in every game and work for the team.

How many lame performances did we see from certain players under Poch and they just get picked again. Under Jose we are seeing players getting hooked off early if they not up to it.

I don’t want to comment on United because there were other dynamics at play. Every manager that went there after Fergie failed, and there were some really good managers.

For sure.. I kind of understand not paying the teenagers so much. Too much too young can get to some.. But if i was a teen and starting most weeks i would soon be wanting same as others 🤔 if one is doing their job then they deserve the money of course.. Too much money in the game now. All top footballers, agents, managers and levys should be forced to give 50 percent of their wages to decent charity addressing famine, disease, poverty etc… They would all still be minted and more than comfortable.

Would you say that Spurs under Poch worked as hard or harder than United under Jose? Just asking.

What has changed? Wouldn’t a bona fide key forward ready to help secure CL next season indicate real change?
What deadwood? Rose near the end,Verts still there, Vic still there, Lamela still there. All over-valued so can’t get out and so don’t get sold/replaced equalling squad discontent. There was definitely a buy in under Poch until this season which is as loyal as you get these days. Levy did not support the manager to allow quality improvements to a CL squad.

😆 the unfortunate truth.. Maybe negative, not nice…. If levy starts buying world class players like werner, dybala, bale, koulabali, joe felix etc then happy days mate.. But the truth is hes notoriously slow at moving players on as well as buying them… Apart from kane and lush facilities and our previous manager, why else would we have the most loyal players? No trophies plus the minimum wage. It just doesnt add up, until you look at levys set up.

You could interpret the stats in many ways. Very few transfers in mean little competition for places. You can pick up your wages and bonuses without any fear that someone else will take your place because there is no one to take it, so why risk it by moving. Loyalty to Poch, London is a nice place for the young and wealthy. Walker left, Dembele and Trippier, Llorente left, so not that loyal. Also that five years were years of relative success, Champions League every year, top four or better every year, why walk away from that unless like Walker you secured a better deal?

Lazy players, ownership and management, not loyalty. Fergie brought in two minimum every season regardless of position. Always has competition for places. Jose in the past, Klopp and Pep follow also the same path.

Hopefully Jose will continue to get rid of the deadwood and we’ll see better, more consistent performances.

Rose has been on our books for twice as long as eriksen… And is still a spurs man really as hes there on a loan… Levy has a massive part to play towards this holding players to ransom with his wage and contract system.. Also having kane would have made some loyal. Levys incompetence in the market now is plain for all to see. Why would the most loyal players belong to a team who wins nothing? City should top those charts.

With Jose it will be simple, there will be no favorites, it will just be down to work ethic…on and off the pitch. He will do the arm around the player stuff as long as they are willing to give all for the cause.
