‘In the past…’: Paul Merson makes Tottenham prediction ahead of Newcastle clash

By Saikat -

Paul Merson believes Newcastle United will get the better of Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on Sunday.

On the back of an impressive 4-0 win over Everton, Tottenham are all set to hit the road to square up against Newcastle United on Sunday. Both teams are battling for a top-four finish, making this fixture an exciting showdown.

While Spurs will be heading into this one confident about getting a positive result, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has made a shocking prediction via his column for Sportskeeda. He believes Newcastle will get the all-important three points from this fixture in front of their fans to build on the strong start they have had.

Merson wrote: “Tottenham had a brilliant result when they beat Everton 4-0 last weekend. But I’m backing Newcastle to win this one. This is a real test for Spurs, especially considering they’re playing away from home. In the past, I’ve seen Tottenham getting destroyed on the road in this particular fixture, so it’s a big test for them psychologically as well.

“The fans at St James’ Park will definitely be up for this game. It’ll be a different atmosphere there on Sunday. Tottenham have a lot to lose here and if they come out of this test unscathed, it’ll be a huge positive for them. That second-half performance against Leicester did not really impress me and that is exactly why I feel Newcastle could beat them in this clash.”

The North London club started slowly with a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Leicester City but they recovered in fine fashion with a 4-0 win against the Toffees. Despite that Merson is backing Newcastle to come out on top here. He feels this will be a very difficult test for Spurs considering the fact that they will be playing away from home.

Having seen Tottenham getting dismantled on the road in this fixture in the past, he feels the North London club will have another difficult day at the office. They will be under pressure for sure and the Newcastle fans won’t make it any easier for them. The 56-year-old pointed out their lacklustre second-half showing against Leicester City, reinforcing his belief that Newcastle will get the better of Spurs. The North London club have a lot at stake in this fixture and a win at St James’ Park could be a massive boost for them.
