“I’m told it is” – Sky Sports journalist names the area Tottenham are looking to address next

Tottenham Hotspur are contemplating strengthening their squad with the addition of a new goalkeeper, though this move might be postponed until the January transfer window.

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge recently pointed out that while the goalkeeping position isn’t currently an urgent concern, there is a belief within the club that introducing more competition for the role would be beneficial.

During his appearance on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Bridge explained that Guglielmo Vicario has solidified his place as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, there is a growing sentiment within the club to introduce stronger competition for Vicario to maintain high standards and ensure depth in the squad.

Although this issue isn’t pressing at the moment, Spurs might still consider addressing it, either before the current transfer window closes or by revisiting the matter in January.

Bridge stated:

“Goalkeeper area is an issue. I’m told it’s not a pressing issue, at the moment.

“Personally. I would like to see more competition for Vicario. When I asked, it is an area which they will be looking at. Whether that gets addressed now or January… I’m leaning more towards January.”

Currently, Tottenham have several backup options in place, including Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin, and Alfie Whiteman.

Forster, who extended his contract with the club until the summer of 2025, has been relegated to the bench following a back injury he sustained last summer, which paved the way for Vicario to secure the starting position.

Brandon Austin has also secured his future with Spurs by signing a new long-term contract, with hopes of becoming the second-choice goalkeeper behind Vicario. Alfie Whiteman, a product of Tottenham’s academy, is another option, having extended his contract until 2025.

As Tottenham progress through the season, the club may revisit the goalkeeping situation in January to ensure Vicario has adequate competition, keeping the squad well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
