Pundit Stuart Robson has advised former manager Jose Mourinho against signing Eric Dier in January, citing concerns about the Tottenham defender’s pace and ability to handle top-level football.

The experienced defender has been shunned by new manager Ange Postecoglou who has not been impressed by the Englishman. He does not seem to have the Englishman in his plans.

He is yet to feature for Spurs this season and was not even been named in the squad that played Fulham in the League Cup earlier in the season despite the manager making 9 changes at that time.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have formed a formidable partnership at the back this season with the duo up there with the best centre-back partnerships in the league.

With his contract expiring next summer, Dier could be set to leave on a free at that time as he will have more options on the table.

However, a recent report has linked him with a January move to AS Roma where his former manager Jose Mourinho is keen on signing him.

Jose Mourinho has a strong familiarity with the Tottenham defender, having previously coached him during his time at the Premier League club.

But pundit Stuart Robson has now warned Mourinho against signing the Tottenham defender.

Speaking to ESPN, he said:

“What do you want? Do you want someone who is quite good on the ball and can play passes into the front players or a good defender? If you want a good defender I would say don’t get Eric Dier, he’s not quick enough, he doesn’t read danger quickly enough, he’s a liability, if you want someone who will just play out from the back, you might want him, but I would say no, I’m not an Eric Dier fan at the moment.”

TBH Says:

A move to Roma could offer Dier a chance to revive his career. Considering the slow pace of the game in the Italian league, his pace might not pose a problem for Dier.

Given that Mourinho knows the player well and his strengths and weaknesses, it could be the perfect move for him.

For Spurs, completing a deal for him in January would be a preferable as well as they will avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.
