“I was a little bit surprised” – Kilpatrick reveals why Tottenham’s summer transfer business surprised him

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham’s summer transfer window has left journalist Dan Kilpatrick somewhat surprised, despite the club’s significant activities in both incomjngs and offloads.

Spurs made five key signings, including Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth in a £65 million deal and Archie Gray from Leeds United for nearly £30 million.

They also extended Timo Werner’s loan for another year, brought in promising young winger Wilson Odobert, and officially welcomed Lucas Bergvall, a deal secured back in January.

In addition to their signings, Tottenham successfully offloaded several players not in manager Ange Postecoglou’s plans including Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – a move that has been widely praised by the journalist.

However, Kilpatrick believes that despite these efforts, the club only achieved a mini squad overhaul this summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Talk podcast (via GiveMeSport), Kilpatrick expressed his surprise at the overall window, particularly given Postecoglou’s earlier comments about the need for significant changes:

“Well, when you were asking which clubs you were surprised by earlier, I was going to bring up Spurs because I was a little bit surprised by the window overall.”

“I think if you go back to what Postecoglou was saying in April about the need for change, he kind of laid out his manifesto for a second season in the club, and talked about how drastically Spurs still needed to change their 11, change the way they worked, changed the culture of the club.”

“So I wondered if it was going to be a real summer overhaul, and I think we did see that in one respect, in terms of the players they got out. You talked about Newcastle struggling to get players out, but Spurs did really well at finally offloading all this deadwood.”

In terms of incomings, Tottenham’s transfer window was indeed underwhelming.

However, Postecoglou recently suggested that the performances of the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall made them decide against signing more players in the midfield area.

Postecoglou has also spoken about his plans to use Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear in the first this season.

The potential integration of these youngsters might have influenced Tottenham’s approach to the transfer market.
