Former Tottenham shot-stopper Paul Robinson believes Ange Postecoglou will look to sign another centre-back in January.
The North London club were quite busy in the recently concluded transfer window. They went hard and secured the services of some of their top targets and even parted ways with players who were no longer a part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans. While they did most things right during the summer window, Paul Robinson feels they lack depth in their squad.
The former Spurs goalkeeper believes Postecoglou’s team are light in most areas but he feels they desperately need to bring in a new centre-back. They didn’t want to rush into a signing during the summer as they would like to bring someone who perfectly fits into their system. Spurs will now prioritise signing a new centre-back when the transfer window reopens in the winter.
While speaking on Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I think the squad is light everywhere. They let a lot of players go this summer, so the squad is light in general.
“Solanke is a good signing, Richarlison is at the club but we don’t know what his future holds, and Archie Gray, Spence and Davies were the only unused subs [v Newcastle United]. Looking at the coverage in defence, you would expect Gray and Davies to be the full-back covers.
“Without another centre-half on the bench, I do think they’re light. The manager will have sanctioned the exits this summer, though. You only make a signing if it’s right for the club, with the right players available. I believe they need another centre-back in, at least.”
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are the first-choice centre-back pairing for the Australian manager. But, with Van de Ven out injured, Radu Dragusin started for them in their last outing. Apart from the trio, Ben Davies is the only other option they have at their disposal.
Van de Ven is a top-level centre-back but he doesn’t have the best of injury history having missed a significant amount of matches last season. While Romero is amongst the best defenders in the world, he is known for picking up occasional red cards. As a result, Postecoglou needs to ensure he has enough depth in the heart of the defence.
Davies can surely help them out for now but he needs someone who can further bolster their backline and help them in the long run. Robinson feels they will put the foot on the accelerator to sign a new centre-back when the transfer window reopens in January.
