Former Juventus star Federico Bernardeschi has opened up about receiving a transfer offer from an English club earlier this summer while hinting that the said club was Tottenham Hotspur.
The 28-year-old winger decided not to renew his contract with Juventus this summer after a 5-year spell, making himself available this summer.
Despite offers from various clubs, the Italian decided to join Toronto FC on a free transfer. Bernardeschi has now opened up on why he decided to join the Canadian outfit admitting that he has ‘nothing to prove’ now after enjoying a successful spell with Juventus. He revealed that he had received offers from various clubs in Europe including from an unnamed English side based in London. And while not naming Tottenham, he gave a huge hint that it was Antonio Conte’s side after stressing his ‘shameless’ admiration for the Italian boss.
He told Gazzetta dello Sport:
“I won nine trophies playing for Juve. What more could I ask for? I have nothing to prove.
“I thank everyone, in particular [Atalanta coach Gian Piero] Gasperini. They wanted me strongly in Bergamo.
“Yes, [I also had an offer] from London. But I don’t say who. Let’s say that I admire Conte shamelessly.”
It wouldn’t come as a surprise if Conte was interested in signing him considering the Spurs’ manager has worked with him before and that the player’s versatility and quality are both something that the Italian boss looks for in his players.
