‘hope he doesn’t take it to heart’: Gary Neville delivers verdict on Solanke’s Tottenham debut

By Saikat -

Gary Neville was pleased with Dominic Solanke’s impressive performance on his Tottenham debut against Leicester City.

The North London club opened their Premier League campaign with an away trip to newly promoted Leicester City’s King Power Stadium. They made a brilliant start to the game and dominated the proceedings in the first half and even managed to take the lead. But, Spurs couldn’t build on it and they gave the Foxes a chance to bounce back.

Thanks to a Jamie Vardy strike, the Foxes managed to equalise and Tottenham had to settle with just a point. It was a disappointing result for Spurs who were in the driving seat for most parts. This fixture marked the debut of the North London club’s record-signing Dominic Solanke.

The former Liverpool striker who had just joined Ange Postecoglou’s team from Bournemouth, started in the fixture and managed to impress Gary Neville with his overall output. He couldn’t find the back of the net but his movements, pressing and hold-up play were quite impressive.

While speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Manchester United defender shared some advice for the English striker.

He said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I think he will feel like everything went as well it could have done apart from the fact the most important thing, that just there [the header].

“The goal, I hope he doesn’t take it to heart to much. His pressing is really important to Spurs and why they have signed him.

“My view on Solanke is that this is a test for him because there will be people, there will be murmurs that he should have taken his chances.

“He had moments, like Richarlison at the end, but I think his overall performance was good. But he will judge upon moments like this where he had two or three decent chances.

“He needs to make sure he doesn’t beat himself up too much in the next two or three days. I would like to think he looks on the positives that he had a really good game apart from the most important things. He will get goals if he keeps doing that as I thought his overall performance was good.”

Solanke had his chances as he took three shots on target but wasn’t able to find the back of the net. The former Manchester United defender hopes the English international doesn’t take it at heart as he did most things right.

Despite the fact that he had his chances, Neville is quite pleased with his overall performance. The former Liverpool star will eventually be judged on the amount of goals he scores but for now, it seems to be a bright start for him on a personal level even though Spurs didn’t get the desired result.
