‘he’s not going to get any football’: Former Tottenham player urges 23-year-old to leave the club

By Saikat -

Alan Hutton has urged English full-back Djed Spence to leave Tottenham this summer.

Djed Spence’s move to Tottenham hasn’t worked out. He has hardly played any first-team football for the North London club and Alan Hutton feels he should look for a move away from the club in hopes of reviving himself.

While talking to Football Insider, the former Tottenham defender talked about how the English full-back has failed to break into their first team and that he is unlikely to get much game time under Ange Postecoglou next season.

The 39-year-old said: “It’s really up in the air isn’t it”

“You’ve got to feel for him, I mean he made the big money move to Tottenham, it didn’t quite work out. I thought he was a very good attacking full-back who was only going to get better.

“For whatever reason, I know his attitude has been questioned, that’s not from me, that’s just what I read so I don’t really know.

“It’s down to him now. He’s even further down the pecking order, behind the likes of Emerson Royal so it’s going to be difficult.

“You would like to think he’ll be able to get a move and really get his career back on track and show everybody what he’s capable of and kick on again.

“If that doesn’t materialise you start to worry for him a little bit because he’s not going to get any football time at all which will make it difficult for him.

“You’d like to hope towards the end of the summer he’ll be able to get a move.”

On the back of an impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Tottenham forked out a significant fee to sign Spence from Middlesbrough in 2022. Since joining the North London club, he has only featured in six matches for their first team and has hardly had any game time.

He has spent a significant amount of time out on loan. Spence started the 2023/24 campaign with Leeds United but after making just seven appearances for them in the first half, he was called back and loaned out to Genoa for the second half where he was involved in 16 matches.

Even Emerson Royal is ahead of him in the pecking order and with the versatile Archie Gray coming in, Spurs could now look to sell Spence if the right offer arrives as they have enough depth at the right-back position.

While Genoa are considering signing him permanently, they are not going to find it easy as Tottenham won’t let him leave on the cheap with three years left on his deal. A move away from the North London club is in the best interest of the youngster as he seeks to revive his career and Hutton is hopeful he can secure a transfer before the end of the window.
