Jamie O’Hara feels Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min needs to be replaced in the near future.
Son Heung-min made the move to Tottenham in the summer of 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. He has gone from strength to strength over the years and has established himself as one of the mainstays in the team. He took over as their skipper following the departure of Harry Kane last summer and had an exceptional 2023/24 season where he scored 17 goals and bagged 10 assists in his 35 league outings.
Spurs made a slow start to the 2024/25 season with just one win in their first four league outings and Son wasn’t really at his best. But, he seems to have taken some pressure off himself with two assists in their win over Brentford on Saturday. While the 32-year-old still seems to be going strong, Jamie
O’Hara feels the South Korean international is finished and he even thinks that proper Tottenham fans will agree that he is done and needs to move on.
While speaking on talkSPORT, O’Hara asked: “How do you feel about Sonny?”
He went on to add: “I feel like I am over the hill with him now. I just think the fans and everyone is finished with him. The proper fans. He’s not doing it.
“The quality in the final third (has gone). He is 33, is he going to go past people? Listen, he has been a great player and an unbelievable player. A Tottenham great.
“But I just feel like when I am watching him now, have you got that sharpness and edge to your game? I don’t think he has. He has gone clean through there one-v-one. The old Sonny, that’s a guaranteed goal. You can’t take him out of the team because there isn’t anyone better than him, but we have to start looking at a new left-winger.”
The former Spurs midfielder did mention the fact that Son is a Tottenham great and he has done wonders for the club. But, he feels the 32-year-old is not at the levels he used to be and he still continues to play day in and day out because the North London club do not have a better option on the left flank.
He has urged his former club to part ways with the South Korean international and look for a better alternative. With his contract running out in less than 10 months, Tottenham do have a massive decision to make. While they will most likely look to extend his stay, he might not have that big a role next season. But, for now, he is still their go-to man and given the kind of performance he gave against Brentford not many will dare to say that Son is finished.
