“He would score more than Solanke” – Troy Deeney believes Tottenham should have signed £40m striker over Solanke

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham’s summer signing of Dominic Solanke has sparked discussion, with former striker Troy Deeney suggesting that Brentford’s Ivan Toney might have been a better fit for the club.

Speaking on the Seaman Says podcast via Betway, Deeney weighed in on Spurs’ transfer decisions, arguing that Toney, who recently moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli for £40 million, would have brought more value to Tottenham’s attack.

The former Watford man pointed out that Toney’s consistent goal-scoring ability could have made a stronger impact on Spurs’ lineup.

Deeney compared Toney to both Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Solanke, hinting that Toney’s versatility and knack for finding the back of the net would likely lead to more goals.

The 36-year-old said:

“Ivan Toney was available, let’s use him as a case in point. Would he add value to Chelsea? Yes, he would score more than Nicolas Jackson. In my opinion he would score more than Solanke at Spurs. Everyone is looking for that mobile, running striker, the goalscoring comes like fifth in the list of attributes.”

While Solanke had an impressive last season, netting 21 goals in 41 appearances, Deeney still believes Toney would have been the better option for Spurs.

Solanke’s arrival at Tottenham came with a significant price tag—£55 million plus £10 million in potential bonuses—marking him as a crucial part of manager Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

While Solanke’s goal-scoring talent was evident last season, Deeney’s remarks raise questions about whether Spurs should have explored other striker options.

Though it’s early in Solanke’s Tottenham career, the club remains optimistic about his potential. Fans are eager to see if Solanke can live up to expectations and provide the goal-scoring threat needed to keep the Lilywhites competitive in the Premier League this season.
