Gold confirms Tottenham’s interest in attacker with 21 goals & 26 assists

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur are set to strengthen their attacking options for the next season, with a keen focus on acquiring a wide forward.

Among the potential targets, Spurs have shown significant interest in their former academy player, Marcus Edwards.

Journalist Alasdair Gold recently revealed on his official YouTube channel that Tottenham are closely monitoring the progress of the English right-winger, who currently plays for Sporting CP in Portugal.

Alasdair Gold mentioned that while no formal approach has been made to Sporting yet, Tottenham is keeping a close watch on Edwards’ situation.

The club views him as a potential solution to their homegrown player requirements, and his acquisition would align perfectly with their strategic goals for the upcoming season.

He said:

“From my knowledge, I know that Spurs are at least keeping an eye on the situation of Marcus Edwards as a potential option.

“I’m not saying it’s a move that is definitely going to happen and no approach has been made to Sporting as of yet or when I last checked in it hadn’t, but he’s being considered as a potential solution to that problem (lack of homegrown numbers).”

Edwards, who has a contract with Sporting until June 2026, has been instrumental in the club’s success, contributing to their 20th Liga Portugal title.

The 25-year-old made 26 league appearances this season, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

Since joining the Portuguese club, he has scored 21 goals and assisted 26 in 110 appearances.

Edwards, who started his career at Tottenham Hotspur at the age of eight, has made remarkable strides since leaving the club.

Following a successful stint at Vitoria de Guimaraes, he joined Sporting in January 2022 for an initial fee of €7.67 million.

Over time, Edwards has established himself as a key player in the Primeira Liga, amassing over 100 appearances and setting a record for the most goals scored by an English player in the league.

Despite his long-term contract with Sporting, Tottenham see a promising opportunity to bring Edwards back to North London.

His style of play and impressive track record in Portugal make him an appealing target for Spurs as they look to bolster their attacking lineup.

Bringing Edwards back to Tottenham would not only enhance their attacking options but also satisfy the Premier League’s homegrown player requirements.

His versatility and proven success in Portugal make him a valuable asset for Spurs as they prepare for the next campaign.
