Tottenham continued their unbeaten Europa League journey with a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar, solidifying their lead in the league phase.

Richarlison scored the decisive penalty in the 53rd minute after Lucas Bergvall drew a foul in the box, calmly slotting the ball down the middle to secure the win.

However, while the goal clinched another three points for Spurs, the penalty itself led to an unexpected moment of tension on the pitch.

Prior to taking the shot, Richarlison and James Maddison briefly clashed over who would assume the responsibility of the kick, drawing mixed reactions from fans and pundits post-match.

Richarlison slammed for being unprofessional

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle later weighed in, describing Richarlison’s insistence on taking the penalty as somewhat “unprofessional.”

Hoddle noted that in situations like these, there should be no question about who takes charge, especially under a captain’s leadership.

The pundit felt the moment called for a more cohesive approach, with Maddison’s role as captain dictating the decision to ensure clarity and unity on the field.

Speaking to TNT Sports via BBC Sport, Hoddle remarked:

“The fact Richarlison scored [the penalty] is great and that is difference between winning the game. But I don’t know, it is a bit unprofessional.”

“If he’s taken off or he’s injured then there might be a scenario where you leave it to the players, but it only works out if you score.”

James Maddison explains his decision

Maddison, who captained the side during the game, ultimately allowed Richarlison to take the penalty, explaining post-game that he made a quick decision based on what he felt would best serve the team.

Recognising that Richarlison was returning from an injury, Maddison thought that scoring could provide the striker a much-needed confidence boost.

He expressed that his choice was intended to support his teammate and build morale, a move he felt reflected his role as both a leader and a supportive teammate.
