Former striker explains his fear of why Antonio Conte could leave Tottenham

The future of Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has been a topic of discussion for the last few months.

Initially, the Italian tactician’s future was hindered by whether Spurs would provide the funds to spend and overhaul the squad into his vision. Then recently, there were reports that Conte is keen on the Paris Saint-Germain job when they eventually sack their manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Despite Conte denying these reports, former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham told The Sun that he fears if the north London club fails to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the 52-year-old will bolt.

“He is a man who wants to do business straight away. He wants to be playing at the top level in big games,” Sheringham said. “But he took the job knowing where Tottenham were. He knew it wouldn’t be easy to get into the top four, and he needs to work harder, so they stay consistent and get in.”

“We know how fickle football is. Money talks, and if others want these top managers, then they go out and pressurise other clubs and make it known. That is why it is in Tottenham’s and Conte’s best interests to get into the Champions League.”

Tottenham is currently four points away from Arsenal, who is in fourth place. Both clubs will face off on Thursday and what will be one of the biggest North London Derby’s, considering what is at stake and how vital the three points are for the two clubs.

A win for Arsenal, and they likely punch their ticket to the Champions League next season. However, a win for Spurs would see them one point off their rivals with two games left on their schedule.
