Former Liverpool star hails Ange signing who could be a game-changer for Spurs

Ex-Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge feels Wilson Odobert could be a game-changer for Tottenham Hotspur.

The North London club haven’t had the best of starts to the new season. They kicked things off with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leicester City. While Spurs bounced back by smashing Everton 4-0, they ended up losing at the hands of Newcastle United on Sunday. It was surely a disappointing result as they ended up losing to one of their rivals for a top-four spot.

But, there were a few positives as well and Wilson Odobert’s performance was one of them. Before their defeat to the Magpies, Daniel Sturridge highlighted the teenager as a player who could lift Tottenham back up because he provides something that the North London club haven’t had for a long time. The 19-year-old likes to run at the defenders and in a one-on-one situation, he could prove to be a handful for any defender in the world.

While speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool star said: “We are talking about a guy who is going to be taking people on with the ball at his feet. He is not shy of confidence, he can go either way, left foot, right foot, or stepovers. This guy is going to bring creativity to Spurs in one-on-one situations that they have probably not had for a while, in terms of how direct he plays.”

Ange Postecoglou was desperate to sign the teenager during the summer and Spurs managed to fulfil their manager’s demands as they forked out £25 million to bring him to the club. The Australian handed him his first start in the game against Everton. While he might not have contributed towards a goal, he surely stole the show with impressive runs down the left flank. The teenager even started the game against the Magpies and this time he was on the right flank.

The North London club slowly moved away from pacey wingers who liked to take on defenders during Mauricio Pochettino’s time at the club. The majority of their wide players tend to avoid taking on defenders, but Odobert brings a different dynamic by directly challenging them and Sturridge feels his abilities will significantly help Tottenham.
