Five massive positives Tottenham can take from the 2-0 win over West Ham United

One win over a very average opponent does not make a season and Spurs still have a long way to go if they are to grab a Champions League spot come the end of the season.

However, despite the poor opposition, there were still some good positives to take from the game, in fact, I would say massive positives.

Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez partnership

For the second game running Dier and Sanchez looked a strong solid partnership at the heart of the Tottenham defence and that is huge when you consider how leaky the defence has been for most of this season.

Harry Kane scoring

Kane always takes time to get back into his groove when he comes off a long lay off and it has taken him just two games to find the back of the net. He looked almost back to his best last night, yeah sure there is still some rustiness but the way he left the West Ham defence for dead and the way he put the ball away shows he is almost there.

Giovani Lo Celso midfield masterclass

The Argentine is a baller of the highest order, he totally dominated the midfield, he was always looking for an opening, he oozes creativity, he has great vision and he is going to frighten the life out of the opponents going forward. He was the man of the match last night easily.

More fluid football

OK, it was only West Ham but just a few months ago Tottenham was playing negative football against teams on the Hammers level and getting beat. It was refreshing to see a tiny bit of the Spurs of old and it shows that Mourinho can set the team up to play more positive fluid football if he is so inclined.

Players getting sharper and fitter

Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura were not at their best last night, especially Alli and Lucas. Those two desperately needed game time and they got it and they will be much better next time out because of the on-field time they got last night. Son was sharper and fitter than when he played against United and taking four points from our first two games and getting a good few of our players sharper and fitter is a massive bonus.

There were more positives for sure, Ben Davies actually getting forward more often as an example but the five I have listed, to me, are huge positives and we will reap the benefits in our upcoming games.

The money spent on Lo Celso was well spent as will
be proved in years to come. He was a quality player in Spain and is a great buy, which makes it all the harder to understand the Gedson deal. It’s early days for him but I m worried that he’s a bust and has hardly played a full game.

Moura and Son are good but both fade in games – this is why we need a strong bench

Sanchez and Dier have done ok, but Toby’s is still better than both. I nearly felt sorry for
Antonio. He must have upset Moyes to be given the role he got last night! Noble was
terrible. His time in the Prem is over. Rice did ok but he’s not worth big, big money. Lads
usually become holding midfielders when they can no longer go box to box, now it is a
fashionable new position where you sit in front of a back four and don’t go forward much!
As for us, that counter attack in the second half missed by Harry was nearly glorious.
Lo Celso is definitely growing into this team. Ndombele should look and learn. Son has
disappointed me in the last two games. The bench was strong, although did anyone notice
we needed a striker for Harry!!!! Poor lad was nearly dead by the end.

Lets not get too carried away it was only wet spam. However I agree there were plenty of positive signs for the future under Jose. These were the sort of games that we were messing up before the lockdown, which came at a very good time for us and our injuries.
I thought the CB partnership of Sanchez and Dier looks way better than before, at last we’ve fitted Dier into the team. Nice to see Kane taking shots on goal too and his finish was faultless. He’s getting stronger every game. Midfield looks good in depth these days, especially AM’s. But we do need another striker to avoid the embarrassment of having to play somebody like Moura upfront. Stop faffing about Levy and get it done you knobhead.
