Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham were interested in signing £34m Juventus star who almost joined Premier League rivals instead

Tottenham have been reportedly interested in Juventus star Weston McKennie for quite some time.

The links began in January and continued into the summer with reports suggesting Fabio Paratici was pushing for a move for the midfielder. It was claimed that a fee of around £34m would have sufficed, but Juve kept their man after new signing Paul Pogba suffered a serious injury.

While Spurs’ interest has long been known, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that Manchester United were actually offered the chance to sign McKennie. This weekend, Romano stated on his YouTube channel that McKennie was among a group of players who were kept as options before the United hierarchy.

McKennie, along with Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco, were all offered to the United officials as they desperately tried to bring in new faces for Erik ten Hag.

And even though United didn’t sign either of the Spurs targets in McKennie and Carrasco, they did complete two major signings of Brazilian duo Casemiro and Antony. However, Romano’s update is noteworthy here, as it demonstrates that, despite their recent struggles, United remains an attractive destination for major stars.

Spurs were at one time linked with Antony but they ended up signing fellow Brazilian Richarlison in a mega 60m pound deal and the former Everton man has been nothing short of impressive ever since his move.
