It’s undoubtedly a malaise of the modern game; whereby some players can still manage to maintain a positive relationship with fans, despite fundamentally failing to earn that warmth and respect. The cult of Dele Alli is something I never understood, even when he was occasionally playing well for Tottenham.
Having been ignored by successive Spurs coaches and the England manager, Alli eventually ended up being foisted upon Everton, with a transfer deal that was backloaded in the event that he came good.
The last hurrah was some parts of the football press dressing this move up as a £40million move. As many of you probably know, that figure could only be achieved if Dele hit certain trigger points.
The truth of the matter is that the now 26-year-old was only a peripheral figure under Frank Lampard. So few appearances have actually been racked up that the Toffees don’t even owe THFC the £10million for playing 20 games.

Here’s the highlight of last night’s game, from the boy. A shot assist.
I noted last night, on social media, that some fans were telling us that Dele had turned the game around. I know there are political spambots, but are there really ones for footballers, too?
Anyone keen to tell me about the ‘amazing running he did off the ball’ needs the sort of help I’m not qualified to provide.
It’s never enough and if Ruby is still around, it never will be
Last sentence, well said, Harry! About five years ago, he would quite often come up with a moment of magic, after doing virtually nothing, much to the irritation of my friend and neighbour, David Dillenberg. And then he stopped coming up with those fleeting moments of magic.
He’s already a millionaire many times over, what motivates him now?
He was voted mom
Pope is better than lloris, as are at least half a dozen keepers in the prem
Like Rashford his off-field activities have gone to his head and occupy his thoughts too much IMO. He sees football now as only a job and not the vocation it once was.
Wot? No mention of ?Curry-gate” or in whatever food a probable AFC supporter placed his “dirty” finger?
Lasagna Gate was exactly the same scenario. Funny that!
Says a lot about the Nth London clowns who are obsessed with THFC.
Naturally all IMHO
One of your finest Sir.
Pop tart..
Levy gave Dele a fatter deal than he would to Eriksen because as an England international at the time and being younger in age he thought it was worth keeping his asset secure. Both of them should have either agreed decent deals by a certain point or be sold while they held value. We missed out on about 130m on transfer fees for those two, purely because of the micromanager…
It is squarely on Levy’s shoulders that Eriksen’s contract ran down to the extent it did. Couldn’t have done anyone? He could have sold him when it became obvious He wasn’t going to agree a new deal, that’s what normal chairmen do.. We could have gotten at least 50-60m for him with a couple of years left on his deal. We got 15m in the end which was a shocking state of affairs to end up with.
Levy was too busy picking carpet samples for the hospitality bars and cheese room to sort the football out it seems… Why would anyone stick up for a chairman who displays such incompetence?
I’ve got nothing against him. Is just that there seems to be so much silliness around him of the pitch that if he’s declining on it, you form an opinion around that…
Firstly, I never believe a word Levy says. Secondly, I suspect that you are right when you say he wasn’t worth £200,000 per week but neither was Alli. Frankly, in my opinion, as an old fart, I’m not sure any footballer is worth £200,000 per week. Let’s see what happens when we go into recession and have the inevitable property crash.
He’s been cra*p for about 5 years now. I still feel if he really knuckled down that he could become a useful player again, for someone somewhere.
It was partly Poch’s ability to get the best out of (at the time) younger players that got him to the levels he reached. Without Poch, and even when Poch was still there and he stopped listening, he’s fallen to bits. Also, there’s probably an element of ‘burnout’ having been playing first team football every week from the age of 16. How old was he when he started with us, only just 18?
Not true. He cost a bubble gum wrapper from MK Don. If we sold him for a hamburger and fries drink included, we make a profit. . 50 goals in such short time from a midfielder was no small feat. You making stuff up now. During the Poch rein none of the players including Ali was for sale.
That is the crooks of the Dele saga. He was no number 10 or winger. He is a mid with pop until someone had the same idea you do. By the time the dust settled. We bought Locelso, Tanguy, Erikssen gone, Kane got hurt so why not stick Dele up there. The laughter was to watch Dele running like he had lead in his pants against Central defenders. Defenders he would have eaten up when he was arriving late and often in the box. But am just here making more excuses..
Dele had a best before date of 2016. Anything after that it was quite obvious he’d gone off and needed binning.
Yes not too many good enough lads coming through the world class academy,I wonder why?
LOL. I wouldn’t waste time watching those two squirts. They’re kids.. Pickford isn’t rated in the top 15 keepers this season. His highest value in transfermarkt was 38 million and this was just because Everton paid so much for him, plus Southgate likes him.. Now he’s valued at 22 million, approaching his prime years he’s devaluing steadily…. Pickford over Lloris is crazy talk… Lloris is a far better keeper, plus he’s been loyal to us for over a decade!… Call me Sir, not Mr.
Too much too young I reckon.. Connor Mcgregor style fall from grace… Some people get too rich too young and it just goes to their head….. This must be a problem now. Teenage millionaires in the game it must be hard to keep them down to earth.
In the Amazon doc the bald one offered to match any wage Tintin was offered elsewhere. He couldn’t have done any more. This was too much in my opinion he’s never worth 200k a week.. He spent 95 percent of his next season on Inters bench, Conte barely played him all season until the last few games he was a sub used sparingly. This was the new challenge he left us for. I hope he enjoyed it. Thanks to Conte he’s got a decent title on his record now anyway.
19 and 20 year old Alli was brilliant. I thought he would develop in to a world class player. Playing as a number 10 off Kane was his best. His numbers were all there for 2 seasons. We saw glimpses of magic.. He was valued by transfermarkt at 80 million when he was just 20 years old..I was a fan… His fall from grace, his drop off has been astonishing though. He’s barely worth 15 million now and should be approaching his prime years.. He’s done the David Bentley but on a whole new level.
I like Dele too. I don’t give a ff if people here agree with me or not. I just have fun chatting about spurs.
I am a fan of Dele and will remain a fan regardless. I think he consistently was played out of his best position because he had some goals in him. A difference in opinion is not often welcome around here. I srill will think they roll the dice on the fee.
Fat Frank has been fighting to keep his job and keep Everton in the prem. He’s going to play the best guys that help him do this. Do you think he really cares about Dele’s contract and not paying Spurs?
The problem is was and always will be with Dele is what position to play him. He’s tried false 9, 10, wing, CDM and more under numerous coaches and still no answer. I wish him well. Why is it so hard to wish someone well? What did he ever do to you guys?
EXPIRED DATE on Dele 90 days past due. Give it up already. Am no conspiracy theorist, but I think Everton calculated to not play Alli until it was mathematically impossible to make the 20 games to avoid the fee. I see no evidence of Dele improvement to warrant the first off the bench status until the treshhold was reached. I believe that they intentional stiff Spurs there.
This site seems to be at war with everyone lol.
Alli is another shining example of our beloved chairman’s world famous negotiations in the transfer market. He should have paid Eriksen the £200,000 he was paying Alli and sold him. He should have let him go to PSG on loan with an option to buy if that particular rumour was ever true. Poch had stopped playing him, Mourinho knew he was a waste of space as did NES and Conte. Thank God we only paid £5 mill for him. Maybe we’ll get that back if Everton sell him for £20 mill but let’s forget him, a complete waste of space.
Whatever.
A pair of bald virgins on the spectrum
I think one thing a club like Spurs needs to do is develop some decent academy players so that some players can be sold at their peak. Not exceptions like Kane and Son unless the money is right. I simply think the way the club is run necessitates this bit like LFC with Coutinho..which would of course mean we know which players we need and then go and buy them with the proceeds of such sales.
Thanks GCTM for the review of that channel, I know still not to bother with them
And that’s the problem Levy is all ego.
That’s why he doesn’t let players go because it hurt his ickle feeling that we were labeled a selling club.
Sell for the betterment of the football is all that’s required.
All about timing,
You could also argue that we’d have been fuming if Levy HAD flipped him for 70m at the height of his powers. Yet we kept hold of him for the “good of the team” – he just didn’t repay that decision.
I just read an article elsewhere that purports that after 1 half decent 45 minutes, that next season Dele could “explode” for Everton and recapture his glory years.
Poor souls, they need to spend a bit of time here. I notice even Lampard is using the same old phrases “can he train harder, can he show me I need o pick him”.
Same old same old, but if everyone WANTS it enough maybe he’ll come good (regardless of whether he himself wants it!)
Mr “Killer Cushion”; Spurs fans don’t come any more enthusiastic than the 2 lads over at We Are Tottenham TV, and they’ve just nominated Pickford as 1st choice keeper in their team of the season. Of course Kane and Son upfront.
Nice to see an unbiased view of football this season from 2 such knowledgeable lads not blinded by their Spurs favoured rose tinted specs. Sometimes it’s alright to give credit away from your own team, it’s called being honest.
The Dele Alli saga is a reflection of all that is wrong at THFC.We do not acquire players for the benefit of the team but as a trading asset to turn a buck on. Levy got Alli for £5million and saw his value get hyped up to ridiculous levels. He thought he could flip Alli for £70 million and hung on and hung on to him despite its detriment to the team and I suspect squad morale and performance. That is why Levy and ENIC have always gone for yoof punts instead of proven quality and why we have won one league cup in over 20 years
I foresee a move to Southampton.
I must use a different Twitter to you.
The kickings will continue until the nonsense stops.
Time to let Dele go, he’s not out on loan but gone for good. Move on nothing to see here.
Maybe we can stop focusing on him – he’s moved on, perhaps so should we?
Let the Everton fans analyse his efficacy or lack thereof… seems to me to be irrelevant now to THFC
The only thing he achieved of note last night was a series of niggling fouls which only succeeded in drawing the attention of the ref and the opposing players. He was upended several times and quite rightly.
Such a sad waste of talent. But he threw it away a long time ago, and yet we failed to offload him for seasons in a row, presumably in the futile hope he’d turn a corner. Like putting bread in a busted toaster every morning hoping that one day it’ll come out toasted.
