During the 1-0 defeat to AC Milan on Tuesday night, Tottenham defender Eric Dier was reportedly enraged with his teammate Son Heung-min for carelessly losing possession of the ball in their own half.
Football London’s Spurs correspondent, Alasdair Gold, covered the match live and witnessed Dier “berating” Son for his mistake.
Gold tweeted that Dier made a sliding interception before spinning around to admonish Son for his sloppy play.
He wrote: “Eric Dier makes a sliding interception before spinning around and berating Son for losing the ball sloppily in his own half.”
This is not the first time Dier has been seen pointing fingers at his teammates. During the 4-1 loss to Leicester City on Saturday, he was caught doing the same thing after the team conceded a goal to Harvey Barnes.
Pundit Don Hutchison, on The Gab and Juls Podcast, criticised Dier for his defensive performance in that game and for his habit of blaming others for mistakes.
Hutchison said that Dier was equally responsible for the goals they conceded to Kelechi Iheanacho and Barnes. He accused Dier of being passive, failing to engage Iheanacho, and doing the same with Barnes.
He said:
“Defensively, they were all over the place. Eric Dier, there’s two goals where Eric Dier’s passive, and he’s standing off Iheanacho, doesn’t engage him. Go and close him down. And then Harvey Barnes, he does exactly the same thing.”
“To make it worse, which I hate, it’s one of my pet hates, he starts pointing at everyone else. ‘You do this, you do that’. You do it! That is Tottenham all over.”
Tottenham are currently going through a challenging phase on and off the pitch. Key players like Hugo Lloris and Bentancur have been injured, and summer signing Yves Bissouma is recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture.
This has left the team short-handed in several positions. They’ve also suffered back-to-back defeats, which puts them at risk of being eliminated from the Champions League and jeopardising their top-four finish.
