“England teammates would laugh” – Former Tottenham player reveals the reason Spurs players were mocked in England camp

Former Tottenham left-back Danny Rose recently shed light on a less glamorous aspect of his time with the England national team, revealing that Spurs players were often mocked by their international teammates over how little they were paid by Tottenham.

Reflecting on his experiences, Rose shared that some of his England colleagues would poke fun at the relatively lower wages that Tottenham players earned compared to those at other clubs.

Despite Spurs regularly competing at the top of the Premier League, players from teams further down the table, such as West Brom, were reportedly earning more.

Rose also explained that Tottenham’s win bonuses were structured in a way that required the team to win by a few goals for players to receive the full reward.

He has been vocal about these frustrations in the past but now believes the club’s pay structure has significantly improved.

Speaking on the In The Zone podcast, Rose commented:

“England teammates would laugh about how much Spurs paid us. I remember one season where West Brom were fighting relegation while we were near the top, and some of their players were on more than what we were on. That wasn’t right.

“With Spurs and win bonuses, you had to win by at least a couple of goals to get a bonus. At the time, I don’t regret saying anything about it because it was the truth, but now I think the lads are being paid appropriately.”

Rose, who made 214 appearances for Tottenham over a 13-year spell, also recalled his career-defining moment—a stunning debut goal against Arsenal in 2010, a thunderous volley that immediately endeared him to Spurs fans.

Despite injury setbacks and several loan moves, Rose remained an essential part of Tottenham’s defence, featuring in key matches, including the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool.
