Tottenham captain Heung-min Son has been recovering from a thigh injury that has sidelined him for nearly two weeks, causing him to miss the last three matches.
With an important game against Aston Villa approaching this weekend, Son’s status remains a pressing concern for Spurs, as they look to climb higher in the Premier League standings.
In a recent evaluation, physical therapy and sports science expert Dr. Rajpal Brar provided an update on Son’s recovery.
Doctor gives update on Heung-min Son
Dr. Brar explained that Son is dealing with a Grade 2 thigh strain, which may still need further time before a full return to competitive play. While the 32-year-old winger has yet to rejoin full training sessions, he is expected to start controlled drills as part of his recovery protocol, helping to test his ability to move without exacerbating the injury.
His potential participation against Villa is uncertain and will hinge on his performance in a late fitness test, which will evaluate whether he can handle a full game’s physical demands.
Speaking with Tottenham News, Dr Brar said:
“Based on some of the tepid language, this seems to be a Grade 2 out of 4 thigh strain.
“When he does return to training, it will likely be partial training where he’s involved in more of the controlled drills.
“Hard to say if he’s a major doubt for the weekend game but he’s certainly a doubt and he may require a late fitness test.“
This is Son’s second injury setback this season, having previously missed five games due to a hamstring injury. Upon his return from that injury, he made an immediate impact by scoring in Tottenham’s 4-1 win over West Ham.
His overall contributions this season have been notable, with three goals and two assists in six league appearances, showing his value to the team’s attacking lineup.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is eagerly awaiting Son’s return, recognising the important role the captain plays both on and off the field.
Currently positioned in eighth place, Spurs need Son’s experience and skill to regain momentum in the league.
Who will replace Son?
Whether he plays tomorrow or not will depend on a late fitness test but in case he does not make it, it will be interesting to see who Ange starts in place of him.
Timo Werner put in an impressive performance on the left against City, scoring a fantastic opening goal in their 2-1 win midweek. While he did come off with an injury concern in the second half, it is expected that he will be okay to play this weekend.
Another option is the 17-year-old Mikey Moore who started against Crystal Palace but failed to make any impact as they lost 1-0.
Summer signing Wilson Odobert would have been another natural replacement for Son, but he suffered another injury setback and will be out for a longer period.
A win against Aston Villa will be crucial for Ange Postecoglou who will want to build up on the win against Manchester City and improve their position in the league.
