Respected Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà believes Toby Alderweireld is off to Roma.
My big concerns with this deal are threefold.
One, if Toby wanted a pay rise at Spurs, he sure as eggs is eggs not going to find one waiting for him at Roma. And two, Mr Pedullà is billing this as a cash plus player swap deal.
Thirdly, and this is a merely a minor niggle, our man Alfredo is also banging on about a release clause on Toby’s existing Tottenham contract, which this blog has been repeatedly advised …not to exist.
Anyone who has been following football for longer than 20 minutes will probably understand that these types of agreements are rare to the point of only usually being found upon the back pages of newspapers.
The suggestion here is that Toby will be topped up to the tune of €23million in order that a 19-year-old attacking midfielder, Nicolò Zaniolo comes the other way. This Zaniolo chap is allegedly valued at €50million.
Forgive the apathy, but I honestly cannot think of anything more enterprising to add than, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’.

Haven’t you heard? NZ was robbed.

Apart from that young French kid,I can’t recall us being linked with any CBs,so if Toby does leave is it entirely with Poch’s blessing? He won’t win any more at Roma than he would with us and I doubt they will pay him more.Give him the money ffs.
It’s also worrying if Dier is seen as a CB from now on as well as Foyth being a RB.This could be a good indication of how little ambition Levy has when it comes to spending money as if we didn’t know.It looks like we the fans have been stitched up again.
Has anyone qualified, confirmed that this ’25m release clause’ is something that actually exists in the real world? Why would anyone other than Toby, his agent or the club actually know about it?
I’m not sure where it came from in the first place. Sounds highly unlikely that’s Levy would sanction that in a contract for any player…
Italy is attractive because they changed their tax rate for foreigners. In Rome he would pay 15% tax, not the effective 50% in UK. But I assume Spurs have offered over £110-120k to negate that. Plus Roma not in CL. Would be odd choice, unless he has a thing about Italy.
This is all so dispiriting isn’t it ?
We, fans, can all see what needs to be done in respect of squad depth & quality.
Why is it that bloody ENIC (and particularly the little bald bastard) cant see it also ??
Surely it cannot be money can it ? ENIC must be sat on a pile of money and assets that all the supporters together couldn’t equal. So why oh why won’t they spend pocket change (to them) on sorting the squad ??
I am completely baffled.
To ENIC does it matter if a new player costs £40mill or £45mill ? I cannot get my head around it.
Anyway, on a happier note we World Cup winners at cricket.
Gutted if he does go ,from what I’ve read the wages he will be getting are not to different to ours but it is a 4 year contract . He looks after himself and the Italian league is slower so I bet he retire there still playing in 4 years. Wouldn’t mind the other chap a 6’3″ attacking midfielder with an eye for goal but do ‘swap ‘ deals even exist?? If true on aldervield it’s been a pleasure sir!! Professional to the end.
Congrats to the England cricket team. Levy that’s what victory celebrations look like, because you and your scum masters have stolen that from THFC by your miserly penny pinching down the years. May you all rot in hell.
Levy has consistently underpaid our players whilst overpaying himself. If the team and him were on performance related pay then for the most part their morale would be sky high and trophies would have delivered, whilst levy would have been down the job centre.
I don’t like the way foyth is now a right back, and no doubt dier a centre half again. I am shit at my job do I’m gonna try brain surgery this week…
I have said it once and I will say it again…and again…Although I don’t doubt Toby’s gripe is about money, I also think its ambition. The boy wants to win stuff. He is quite arguably the best CB in the world and has F’all silver to show for it. I cant see how moving to Roma will fix either of those things.
I think Levy “may” offer him wages on par with the other top defenders (VDV is on £180k a week – Toby on £80k) but until he buys in players to actually COMPETE (and I mean for silver and trophies…not top 4, increased league position and a great bottom line) Toby will want to move on. He will be fully aware that despite being 31 next summer, he could easily pick up a contract at any club if he is free, and he could even move in January. Only way we keep him is to pay him what he is worth and buy players that are worthy to play alongside him.
Toby needs to be tied up in a 3 year deal. If he leaves Levy’s legacy as a penny pinching dweeb will be solidified.
I would be very sorry to see Toby go. Not only has he been a true stalwart on the pitch, at the heart of our defence, but he also handled his contract saga at Spurs and the period where Poch ostracised him, with the utmost professionalism as well. Would be a big loss in my opinion. Sanchez and Foyth are not at the same level.
Not sure about this Zaniolo kid, but bearing in mind it was Baldini who lumbered us with Lamela, also from Serie A, I am somewhat sceptical that a 20 year old who has been described as ‘slow’ and whose passing ‘needs to improve’, is really worth 50 million euros of our budget. On the other hand, if Baldini would like Lamela back? There’s a thought!
