Despite a lack of playing time, pundit says Tottenham should not loan out fringe player in January

Joe Rodon has struggled to earn first-team minutes at Tottenham in this campaign and he has been tipped to leave Spurs on loan in the January transfer window.

However, Noel Whelan believes that would be a terrible decision and Tottenham might end up regretting it.

The Lilywhites added Cristian Romero to their squad in the last transfer window and his arrival means they have more than enough options at centre-back now and that reduces Rodon’s chance of earning minutes at the club.

Because of his international career, Rodon might feel he has to leave at least temporarily so that he can keep getting match minutes.

Spurs could accept the suggestion if they feel secure enough in that spot, with Japhet Tanganga also an option at centre-back.

However, former Leeds United striker, Whelan believes it makes no sense for them to allow him to leave on loan in January considering that they could have an injury crisis and would need options.

When asked if Spurs should loan out Rodon in January, He told Football Insider: “No, absolutely not.

“He’s a quality centre half and right now we’re still seeing Tottenham shipping goals. We don’t know whether there’s going to be suspension or injuries.

“Doing that, you’re lessening and weakening your side to benefit somebody else. Absolutely not. I think you want to see players like that at the club.

“They bring out the best in other defenders and bring out the best in him. You want to see players fight for their position and that’s what the manager wants as well.

“Internationally, it will not change anything. He will still get called up because he’s one of the best defenders in the Wales squad.

“He’s getting that game time in Europe, as long as they stay in that competition, and the other cup competitions.

“There’s nothing to say he won’t fight his way back into that first-team reckoning at Tottenham. Look, it’s about Tottenham first and international second.”
