Daniel Levy masterstroke: Romano confirms Tottenham are “closing in on deal” for La Liga ace as part of Lo Celso deal

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso is likely to leave the club as the transfer deadline nears.

Fabrizio Romano reports on X that Real Betis is actively working to secure a deal with Spurs for their former player Lo Celso.

In another update he reports that the discussions involve Tottenham gaining a priority option to sign American midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis in the future, along with a share of any future transfer fee for Lo Celso if Spurs decide not to pursue Cardoso.

Romano shared the following:

“EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham are closing in on deal to agree on priority option to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis in the future! Tottenham will also buy a percentage on future sale in case they decide against signing him. It’s part of the deal for Gio Lo Celso to Betis.”

Cardoso is a versatile midfielder whose primary position is a defensive midfielder but can also play as a central midfielder.  At 22-year-old, he has already made 166 senior appearances, scoring 8 and assisting 7.

Recently, Lo Celso was informed that he is not part of manager Ange Postecoglou’s plans for the current season, making a transfer necessary. The Argentine midfielder is eager to return to Spain, where he has previously enjoyed successful stints with Villarreal and Real Betis in La Liga.

Lo Celso originally joined Tottenham on loan from Real Betis in 2019, with the move becoming permanent in January next year. Despite his early promise, the midfielder has struggled to cement his place as a regular starter in North London over the seasons.

With the player in the final year of his contract, set to expire in June 2025, Spurs are eager to finalise a deal this summer to avoid losing him for free next year.

As the transfer window draws to a close, Tottenham are working to complete the deal, which would see Lo Celso return to La Liga and potentially set up a future move for Johnny Cardoso, ensuring both financial and sporting benefits for the club.
