Cristian Romero faces making a pointless trip to South America if his suspension isn’t reduced

Club football is on a break as the international break is here, and national teams fight to clinch their spot in the FIFA World Cup later this year in Qatar.

Players on the Tottenham Hotspur squad will be traveling to their respective nations, including Cristian Romero. However, there might be an issue with the Spurs heading to the Argentina national team.

The 23-year-old is one of four Argentina stars registered to Premier League clubs suspended for two international matches concerning the abandoned World Cup qualifier against Brazil last September.

Nonetheless, Daily Mail reports that the Argentine Football Association hopes Romero’s ban is cut to one game on appeal. Should CONMEBOL reduce the Spurs defender’s suspension, he would be eligible for the qualifier against Ecuador on Wednesday, March 30.

The center-back might be making a wasted trip to South America and back if it isn’t. As a result, Spurs will understandably feel concerned regarding Romero heading to Argentina, especially since it might be a pointless journey.

It’s understandable for Tottenham to feel like this, considering in November, Romero suffered an injury that held him out for almost three months. Furthermore, Argentina has already qualified for the World Cup, so the north London club might fear Romero getting injured in a pointless fixture.
