Richarlison gets the nod: Conte’s Starting XI vs Marseille

By The Boy -

The return to the Champions League has been heralded by Spurs by a £2 hike in the program price, but compared to the hefty ticket prices, what’s another few coins? Maybe one day, it will be spent on players that a coach can use to advance the team before he’s forced to exit the premises forever.

This is Conte up against it, from here on in, and it was no surprise that the gaffer refused to agree that we landed in a softer group than some. Tottenham under the Italian has fielded very similar starting xis with little or no rotation. Add the pressure of a condensed fixture list because of the World Cup and the cries from fans to see Djed Spence and others may well reach fever pitch. One or two injuries and Antonio will have no alternative but to run out his less favoured players.

Now that I think about it, Romero dropped a beautiful diagonal to Perisic, who of course muffed it. Romero was soon pulled…

Ho-efully this isn’t the start of Conte realizing what Levy is. Spence wasn’t the managers choice.

Conte sees him as making up the numbers for the training pitch.

Everyone but Spence played RWB yesterday. First Royal, then Kulu, then Tanganga played out wide for a couple of shifts with PEH dropping back before Conte put Doherty in. If Lucas was healthy he probably would’ve played there too.

But I agree with you Spence deserves a shot.

Alternatively – we only eventually beat 10 men, which Son, due to his top of our range pace, was responsible for. No Son, no red card leg-up, less likely win. ?

Given how good he is, it struck me as odd how little of the ball he saw up to the time he put in the cross for Richarlison’s first goal.

Conte got it wrong last night IMO. They were clearly under instruction to play through the middle and try the little flick on for the deep runner. But there was just acres and acres of space for the wingbacks but nobody was popping a diagonal ball over the top for them – it was just bizarre.

I know he’s a noob, but for me the game was absolutely set up for Djed Spence to come on and start bombing down the flank. Instead we got poor decision making and an almost hit and hope tactic through the centre circle on the off chance that one flick might work eventually.

Another opportunity for me to harp on about the folly of us not investing in a world class right wing back.

Not only a £2 hike for a programme Harry, I was more dismayed to find the Neck Oil has gone from a fiver to £6.29 – cheeky sods!

He earned the red, but was very poor again. Kane, Richie, and Kulu should start at City.

Having Perisic in there is brilliant. A grown-up, damn good footballer.

According to the stats, Son gave the ball away 17 times – it felt like it

Neither Kane or Richarlison are slouches in the air…Perisic seems capable of crossing, could be a regular source of goals

The defending by Liverpool was out of this world last night….and not in a good way.

Unbelievably poor, schoolboy stuff.

Only just seen the clip of Richarlison going to his parents in the crowd.
Made me realise what an “elder statesman” Perisic is (he grabs him and has some words of encouragement and doesnt boot him up the ‘arris this time).

Don’t think I’ve seen him make a forward pass, definitely not a good start to his Spurs career either way.

This statement is non judgemental just a warning for Citeh
The marking for the first goal was very Spursy.
Each attacker is covered by a defender apart from Richarlison who is in space consequently an almost perfect header.
An attacker can still win the ball but it is a cardinal sin to leave an opponent unmarked.

Poor old Kulu sacrificed because Conte for all his temper tantrums hasn’t got the cojones to bench Son.

Certainly seems like Richarlison has caused a Sonny malfunction. He seemed to be operating well with Kulusevski on the right, but Richarlison comes in and he looks very very out of sorts. His entire demeanour has ‘very unhappy’ written all over it.

I agree, Richarlison seems to be determined to prove himself at a big club. As you say, how much longer can we play like this and get away with it?

Klopp was majorly backed, they weren’t good defensively before VVD and Allison signed. Klopp’s success came on a wave of top signings, perhaps the rejuvenation of that high is beyond him?

Sure, I joked he still has his pace.

But that first half he stood out as particularly weak – I’d need to see the stats on how often he was caught on the ball because it seemed like A LOT.

The red was earned.

Could have been better for us if Son continued and scored to break his duck rather than the red, somethings up with the bloke he was cheaply robbed of the ball about 10 times that first half and he can’t seem to strike a football in anger.

Kane is out of form and a bit desperate/snatchy.

Son is out of form and a bit weak/lacking in confidence.

If those two are in better form we score nearly every counter.

What I don’t understand about the Liverpool game is that both teams want to get into the opponent’s half when they have the ball.

Is that football?
