Compensation Said To Be Deterring Champions League Regulars Bayern From Making Poch Approach

Bayern Munich are monitoring Mauricio Pochettino’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur in the hope that he becomes available to be appointed as their manager, according to The Athletic.

The German champions sacked Niko Kovac earlier this month and had interviewed Arsene Wenger for the post, Sky Sports reports.

However, The Athletic understands that interim boss Hansi Flick will be given the role until the end of the season to allow Bayern more time to scope out a long-term solution, of which Pochettino would be first choice.

A source told David Ornstein, who is pretty well-connected within London circles: “Pochettino would be the preferred solution. If he and Spurs end up splitting, which looks likely, Bayern will do anything to get him.”

Interestingly, Ornstein’s source indicates that Bayern would only be interested in Pochettino if and when he leaves Spurs, probably fearing the huge compensation that chairman Daniel Levy would demand if they approached the Argentine while he is still under a long-term contract.

While there is growing frustration at Pochettino’s contribution to our dire recent form, this is a reminder of how high our manager’s stock is. Never before have we had a manager courted by an elite European club.

Equally, there has seemingly been little interest from clubs of Bayern’s stature in any of the want-away players who Pochettino is hoping to outlast at Spurs.

Something for the #PochOut brigade to think about…
