Coach Shortlisted For Spurs Job Could Influence One Of The Most Discussed Transfer Moves Of Recent Years

As nice a guy as Ryan Mason evidently is, the odds of him being appointed the head coach of Tottenham. Winning the Carabao Cup wouldn’t harm his chances, but it is unlikely that Daniel Levy would want a decision that had to be made in haste to become a permanent deal.

Corriere di Torino believes that shortlisted Sarri could be an appointment that that might prove influential in helping none other than Paulo Dybala make his mind up on his next club.

Who knows that the turning point may not coincide with the future of Maurizio Sarri who, after his contacts with Roma, also opened at Tottenham.

Sarri is thought to be linked with both Spurs and Roma, and that as a result that either side might benefit from his relationship with Paulo.

My issue with all this business is not just suffering from a heavy dose of ‘Dybala fatigue’, but trying to envisage Maurizio Sarri’s impact at Hotspur Way. If it is true that many of the current squad didn’t care for José Mourinho, it is difficult to believe that Sarri would be seen as the most easy-going, diplomatic character.

If I were running Tottenham right now, I’d swerve any opportunities of a lifetime for expensive stars and hard-faced coaches, and instead concentrate upon finding a unifying solution.

One of the fastest ways to diffuse the stone throwers outside the club is to ensure that internally, things are on an even keel.

eh eh eh Sure, I personally would love to see a Sporting-grown player becoming a Tottenham star. The best of this batch is, by far, Nuno Mendes. I truly believe he is destined for greatness, but he’s a LB and at Tottenham we have Reguillón, so…
Having Tottenham’s needs in mind, I would recommend keeping an eye on Gonçalo Inácio, a 19-yo left-footed CB with well-above average technical and passing skills.

Regarding Marcus, it’s hard to tell, as Sporting plays in a weird 3-4-3 formation (3-4-2-1 would probably be more accurate), with two WB covering the wings and everyone else funnelled through the centre. I mean, I would love having him in Sporting’s squad, but whether he could break into the first 11 would depend on his capacity to adapt to a more central role (or WB, for that matter). By the way, he had a really horrible match versus Porto last weekend. It was really disappointing, as he was coming from his best run of the season. But he was visibly nervous, probably due to the fact that he was playing a bigger club that has him short-listed, and things never got going for him. He was always easily dispossessed by Porto’s defence and fumbled the only chance at a shot he had all game. It’s a pity. I’m really rooting for him to succeed, but the boy might really have an issue handling pressure.

Sure there’s money. Banks are full of it. The idiots running the club are bankrupting it in an all-in bid for the title. We just spent a club-record EUR 18m on a striker Amorim absolutely demanded we must have, and to say he has been disappointing would be the understatement of the year. Since these bozos took over in 2018, they spent close to EUR 90m (which is obscene by PT standards) in players. Out of these, on our first 11 we have Adán (free transfer), Pedro Porro and João Mário (loanees), Feddal (EUR 3.5m) and Pedro Gonçalves (EUR 7.5m for 50%). Everything else has been money down the drain. Luckily for us there’s a very good generation of youngsters from the Academy. They’ve been carrying this team on their backs.

But no, I don’t want him gone. Even if he fails this season, he’s young. Hopefully, he can learn from what went wrong. Plus, a manager who can develop youngsters is a must for Sporting. There are some really hot prospects in our ranks. But seriously, there’s a lot he needs to change.

Oh yes, 27 undefeated matches. It’s an all-time record for Sporting. Yay! Except, not losing does not necessarily mean wining. Don’t get me wrong, defensive-wise, he did an amazing job. It’s extremely difficult to score a goal vs Sporting at this point. But we’re lucky if we get 7-8 pops per match at the opposition’s goal, even versus bottom-of-the-table cannon fodder. And believe me, some of these PT teams are appallingly bad. We’ve been winning matches through sheer effectiveness. 4 shots, 1 goal, we park the bus and it’s a 1-0 victory. Whenever plan A doesn’t work, well… there’s no plan B, so we draw. And plan A has been failing quite often lately. We drew 3 of our last 5 matches. A 10-point lead turned to 4, and we have Porto at top form breathing down our necks. I honestly don’t see this ending well for Sporting.

I’ll never feel bad about getting behind my manager “wrong or not. Blind and can’t see? I can see we have only just moved into the new place and a pandemic fck’d us up for a bit yet in our first full year in we’re in a cup final. Big things gonna happen at the new lane and I won’t hear any different. I will not be judging levy by his old lane work. I’ll be judging him on his new lane work.
All the stick he’s been given to get here and you don’t think he deserves a chance to prove himself here with a few quid coming in now? To me that’s not right. Also all those who believe ENIC are nicking money from the club and are not making any real noise about it are soft. Also those who think we borrowed all that money to not own the stadium are soft too. No fkin NFL yank can tell Tottenham what to do with her stadium. TOTTENHAM tell them when they can use it (if the moneys right) and we always take the food and drink takings. Tottenham out to rinse dem.

It’s quite simple. Enic and Levy are only interested in money. They sacked Mourinho because he told Levy the truth and because it cost them less to do it as we were 7th at the time and if we win the Carabao Cup, it would have cost that worm Levy even more. So, off trotted Mourinho and his brown nose Sacramento to try to earn another payday. You bigged up Mourinho and you were wrong. You keep bigging up Levy and you remain wrong. “There is none so blind as he who will not see.”
We remain anchor tenants.

hmmm as a Sporting (please, don’t call us Sporting Lisbon, we’re Sporting Clube de Portugal) fan, I wouldn’t recommend him. He’s about to lose the league title to Porto, after having a 10-point lead, through his stubbornness and inability to own up to his mistakes. Also, he managed to get kicked out of the Europa League by LASK f*****g Linz! Plus, he’s every bit as defensive-minded as Mourinho. On a positive note, he’s fabulous at working with and developing young players, but still…

No, they aren’t, and some of them are too ‘lightweight’ for a club like this IMHO. Ideally, we’d get rid of Hart, Davies, Dier, Sanchez, Sissoko, Winks, Aurier, Doherty, Alli, Bale and Vinicius and hit the transfer market like a bored housewife on Black Friday. Alas, with ENIC, I don’t expect we’ll replace more than 3 – 4 of those this Summer. Hence, my suggesting Sérgio. I mean, he turned Moussa Marega from the laughing-stock of the PT league into one of its top players. I’m sure he could help some of the above significantly improve their game. Not to mention our youngsters.

But, yes, his fast, pressing game requires a very high work rate, something some of the lazy sods that currently make up our squad likely would not be up to, so ultimately success could hinge on his motivational skills. In that respect, he has been praised by club chairmen and players alike throughout his career here in PT, but I concede he might be a tad too strict and disciplinarian for the likes of some of our softies. That could, indeed, prove his undoing. And, even though he is not an ar****le who throws his players under the bus in press conferences, like Mourinho, his half-time dressing-room outbursts following a s****y first-half are the stuff of legend here 🙂

Enic know the real money (when selling) is in a title/big cup winning team. That’s next. No investment from them (still) they want it done with the clubs money. Money the club makes will be invested back into the squad to reach this objective. All this crap about only wanting top four now at the new lane is nonsense. Its like people dont understand what’s going on here.

Yeah, and I would even understand it if top 4 were a means to an end, i.e. getting CL money to invest in the squad and challenge for the title. Unfortunately, money seems to be the end in itself for ENIC.

100% with you, Marbella Spur. Rodgers would be my pick as well, but I too am pretty sure he’d politely decline. I think Gerrard would be a good choice as well, but I suspect he might be saving himself for Liverpool. I believe Klopp stated somewhere he might want a new challenge when his current contract runs out. Moreover, it’s like you said, any successful manager with a thorough knowledge of the ins-and-outs of the Premiere League would likely want nothing to do with Levy. We could probably get Potter or Parker, and I’d be OK with either, but I’d prefer someone with a bit more experience managing a top club under their belt.

What’s more frustrating with the Poch affair is that with a couple astute signings we could have clinched the CL that season. I’ll never forgive ENIC for that, even if I live to be 100.

Every time I think of Sarri, that is the picture that plays over in my head. Had he chucked Kepa out of the squad to play with the youngsters it would have redeemed him in some small measure. But if I remember correctly he was back in goal in a fortnight. Avoid this man at all costs.

I know little about the Porto manager lauded in the post below, but what self respecting manager wants to work for Levy? There is zero ambition within the club to winning silverware. Levy is happy with a top four finish and that is the extent of his ambition. I think Rodgers is the best candidate but why would he leave Leicester who have owners who back the manager and have an excellent recruitment record? The best manager we had was Poch and he wasn’t backed as we all know. If I had to throw a hat into the ring, perhaps Gerrard might be the answer but he probably knows precisely what a snake Levy is. Sadly, as I have mentioned on many occasions, it doesn’t matter who the manager is at Spurs as long as Levy is in charge.

Though Sarri is a manager I appreciate, assuming Nagelsmann and Rodgers are out of reach and that Levy is still unwilling to carry out that much-needed squad overhaul, my pick would be Sérgio Conceição, from Porto. He has a proven track-record of doing more with less. 4 years ago, when Porto signed him, they were experiencing serious financial difficulties. So, basically, besides a couple of bargain signings from minor Portuguese sides, he had to work with what he had. That year, they won the PT League, despite heavy spending from Benfica. During his tenure at Porto, they won the league title twice (were I not a Sporting fan, my money would be on them to win it again this season), 1 PT cup, 1 super-cup and reached the quarter-finals of the CL twice (deservedly hammered by Liverpool in 18-19, unluckily defeated by Chelsea this season). All that with a squad of bang-average players, whose only stand-outs are Pepe (now 37) and Sérgio Oliveira (whom Conceição transfigured from an average 10 into the best PT box-to-box I have ever seen). His Porto is an extremely aggressive, fast-paced, whole-pitch pressing, attacking-minded team and he has been delaying a renewal of his contract, which runs out in June. I’d definitely have him short-listed.

Not backing a manager with the right players, hanging on to players eg Eriksen Rose Deli all added to an impossible situation for most of our managers.

East Stand

I’m not sure that there an endemic attitude issue in our squad that is any worse in terms of personnel than most other clubs.

Circumstance has led to the dysfunction, beginning with the double effect that a lack of backing brings.

The manager looks like he’s being undermined at board level and that feeds into the player’s opinion of him. Secondly not having new faces and ones that really push the quality needed to compete for a place is another effect.

If you lose forward momentum because of board level stuff then it will eventually end badly. There’s nobody else to blame but ENIC.

On the basis of unifying a squad in disarray I think Rodgers is that man to reinvigorate and refocus to get them all on his side, I think he fits perfectly into the job in hand, but it is doubtful he would jump onto a sinking ship at this stage.
That said, if we offload at least four or five of the current squad it would help the situation drastically.

Footballers are a different animal from what they were 20 years ago, the reasons for which are for another debate.
My kids come home from school of an afternoon despondent and aggrieved because such-and-such a teacher shouted at them today. I explain that when I went to school, we were physically assaulted by our teachers on a daily basis. With weapons, weapons specifically manufactured to hit children with. They don’t believe me.

Point being, just as modern children perform and respond better to the modern friendly approachable teaching methods of new, so the modern footballer is more willing to try hard for a manager who praises and encourages, opposed to one who gives orders and criticizes.
My teachers were the Sarri’s and Mourinho’s of this world, theirs are the Pochettino’s and Naglesman’s.

Who would be a great unifying influence is anyone’s guess. I don’t fancy Sarri either, I don’t see a host of suitable candidates.

The most suitable one was already at the club but Levy failed to grasp quite how suitable he actually was and let Amazon and his belief that fully backing managers is a bad idea, cloud his judgement.

The last 2 years and particularly the last week or so have demonstrated quite how clueless Levy is when it comes to football. To quite a worrying extent!
