Tottenham Hotspur’s €40 million signing of Pedro Porro last summer has proven to be an outstanding investment.
The Spanish defender has been exceptional in his first full season in the English top flight, establishing himself as one of the top full-backs in the division.
Despite his impressive performances, Porro might leave North London this summer.
The 24-year-old recently missed out on selection for the national team, which could prompt him to seek a move away from the Premier League.
Club insider John Wenham voiced his astonishment at Porro’s exclusion from Spain’s provisional squad for the 2024 UEFA European Championship.
Since arriving from Sporting, Porro has been a mainstay under manager Ange Postecoglou, starting in 92% of the league games. His contributions from the backline have been significant, with 3 goals and 7 assists in 35 appearances this season. (Transfermarkt)
In an interview with Tottenham News, Wenham expressed surprise at the defender’s omission by Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente.
The club insider speculated on how Porro might react to this snub: he could either use his disappointment as motivation to improve his performances next season or consider a transfer to increase his chances of national selection.
He said:
“I found it very strange that he wasn’t selected.
“He got nine assists in the Premier League, which is difficult to do as a right-back.
“I thought he excelled this season and adapted well to Ange Postecoglou’s demands.
“This could go one of two ways. Porro could either get his head down and perform even better next season, which would be the hope.
“Or the worry is that he looks to seek a move away to get himself into contention for the Spain squad.”
This frustration could drive Porro to contemplate leaving Spurs in search of a move to a prominent Spanish club, where he believes his chances of being selected for the national team would be higher.
Porro’s potential departure would be a significant loss for Spurs, given his impact and consistent performances throughout the season.
