Club insider advises against pursuing ‘average’ Premier League player linked with club

Tottenham have been exploring potential midfield targets for the summer transfer window.

The club has reportedly shown interest in Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira.

However, club insider John Wenham has expressed concerns regarding this unlikely purchase.

Wenham acknowledges Pereira’s standout performances for Fulham but doubts he meets the high standards required for a top-six Premier League team like Spurs.

Despite Pereira’s respectable performances last season, scoring three goals and providing seven assists in 37 Premier League appearances, Wenham believes the Brazilian would be an average addition to the Spurs squad.

Pereira, who signed a four-year contract with Fulham in July 2022 for a fee reportedly around £10 million with add-ons, has made a significant impact at Craven Cottage.

He debuted in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool and quickly became a key player for Fulham.

Wenham suggests that the North London outfit should consider other midfield options, arguing that there are potentially better-suited players within Fulham’s ranks, such as Joao Palhinha.

Speaking to Tottenham News, he said:

“He is one of the star players at Fulham, that is for sure.

“But for Tottenham, I think he would just be an average player, and for that reason, I don’t want the club to sign him.

“I could think of three or four players I would rather sign from Fulham alone.”

As Tottenham aim to bolster their team for the upcoming season, deciding whether to pursue Pereira will require consideration of Ange Postecoglou’s long-term strategy and immediate needs.

Bolstering the midfield remains a top priority for the club. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is set to leave the club this summer, as he seeks regular playing time at a Champions League club.

The club has been strongly linked with Conor Gallagher, but there has not been any official approach for him yet.
