The source is perhaps unknown to many, however members of the Football Writers’ Association don’t retain their membership for very long if they are discovered to be peddling nonsense.
What is interestingg here is that we get what I believe to be an accurate glimpse of how football in the Premier League actually works – and the gulf in the mechanics between Spurs and Manchester United – even when United are on a low ebb.
Right now, it is perfectly predictable that United would want to sign Champions League grade players, and be rebuffed. Those players are bound to want guaranteed Blue Chip football, not another slog to try and secure it.
The other side of the coin is, when you’re a rubber stamped Champions League side, you shouldn’t be the one looking for players – they should come to you. Just as Real Madrid and Barcelona have their own gravitational pull about them.
Tottenham don’t have that pull. Even a modest talent like Jack Grealish preferred to stick with the devil he knew.
If Daniel Levy has spent the last 3 windows fending off top players and their agents – then how come so few names ever made it into the public domain?
The business of asking fans to believe that Poch only wanted the ‘right’ players is beyond risible. When you’re starving, you don’t turn your nose up at a chesse sandwich and tell people you’re waiting for steak.

Another day closer to starting preseason training without a significant signing, another day closer to Poch finally giving up on broken promises and getting on his bike. Let’s be honest, the prospect of a few months off until the United job becomes available in October must have some appeal. The horrible truth is that Levy will not pay big bucks for anyone until he sees money coming in from outbound transfers. His biggest asset is caught in limbo while Pogba makes up his mind which team he wants to poison next and even when that is sorted out we will once again have to witness the sad spectacle of Levy wringing every last penny out of buying clubs up to the end of the window. Like many of you I was optimistic that Poch could finally force Levy’s hand this time around but I’m afraid it’s just deja vu all over again.
