Spurs got Manchester City.
Hurrah.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will play Porto while Manchester United take on Barcelona. In the other tie, Ajax play Juventus.
Liverpool and Tottenham will play their first legs at home. With City set to host the second leg, that means United’s tie with Barcelona will be reverse to avoid the Manchester clubs being at home on consecutive days.
Should Liverpool and United both progress, they will play each other in the semi-final. The winners of the Spurs v City tie will play either Ajax or Juve for a place in the final.
City won both of their Premier League ties with Tottenham last season and also beat Mauricio Pochettino’s side at Wembley earlier in this campaign.
United’s tie against Barcelona means interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will enjoy another trip to the Nou Camp, where he scored the winner in United’s Champions League final win over Bayern Munich in 1999.
Liverpool have never lose to Porto in six matches, winning three and drawing three. The Reds ousted the Portuguese side from last season’s competition, winning the first leg 5-0 away from home and seeing out a 0-0 draw in the return leg.
The decider will be played on June 1 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.
Champions League quarter-final draw
Ajax v Juventus
Liverpool v Porto
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City
Barcelona v Manchester United*
*Tie reversed: United will play at home first.
First leg: 9/10 April. Second leg: 16/17 April.
Champions League semi-final draw
Tottenham / Manchester City v Ajax / Juventus
Liverpool / Porto v Manchester United / Barcelona
First leg: 30 April / 1 May. Second leg: 7/8 May

Yes. Its Liverpool’s year and City get CL for consultation.
Champions only, though more satisfying logically, did mean that the field could be a little thin, especially as one or two of those champions might not be the same force as in the previous year when winning their respective titles. Much harder now to fluke a win in the competition with the greater depth (Champions Cup + Uefa Cup essentially). The Cup Winners Cup was the slightly dodgy tournament, though at least you generally had to win a cup to get into it (unless your champions did the double etc), because some mediocre teams can win a sudden death cup competition. It was by far the easiest of the three European trophies to win.
European cup. UEFA and cup winner cup. Them were the days. The real champions played each other in the European cup, not teams who came 4th by not drawing against Burnley, Palace and Huddersfield etc.
I tend to agree unless Pool make the final as very overdue to win one. The Reds will take the league title, though.
If you win the Europa, you’re basically Europe’ SECOND DIVISION champions and you get promoted to the first division (ie CL), unless that is, you’ve already qualified through your league position. In the old days, though less prestigious and less desirable as a trophy win, it was generally harder to win than the Champions Cup with the qualifiers for this tournament starting from SECOND place (and not FIFTH!) and proceeding through 3rd and 4th etc. There was great depth to that tournament and the Champions Cup featuring only the champions, one or two of whom might have shaded off the following season, often much easier to win. To sum up, today’s Europa is a castrated tournament with no real logic for its existence (for instance, why not have a competition for teams that finish 12th and 13th and call that a major tournament, too!) with about a dozen of its best teams syphoned off to the European Cup. Today’s CL is the old European Cup plus UEFA Cup more or less. Clubs like Dundee and even Kilmarnock with their semi final appearances could quite conceivably have won back in the sixties with today’s qualifying system. I concede, though, that any competition, you may just as well try and win it if you’re in it ie Europa Texaco, Anglo Italian etc.
Like it!
+ 3 other prizes scooping the lot is their objective, never been done before.
I reckon City have the CL this year.
Not that i’m all that interested in the plate competition for also rans, but Napoli seem the only threat to Chelsea and Arsenal. Chelsea would perhaps be my favourites but the Arsenal manager something of a specialist at winning this fairly pointless competition, having done so three times with Sevilla who never win a domestic trophy but have won this thing five times, haven’t they in about a dozen years or so? In reality, we’ve already achieved on a par with winning the Ropey by reaching CL QF but no trophy for it. Sevilla have played several times in CL but never get beyond QF!
This a very salient point: that the leagues everywhere are becoming so boringly predictable that domestic football will more or less extinguish itself with a resulting European Super League. This I don’t want to see. Too much of a supposedly good thing is not good for you. In theory, at least, there is nothing inherently disagreeable about appreciating one’s bread and butter, namely the domestic game and the old traditional rivalries and with the Eropean games being glamour games. Too many glamour games and they cease to feel like glamour games. In cricket, to my mind, there is now far too much international stuff and the bread and butter county game has been sadly marginalised losing many of its star performers on test contracts. The trouble with football is that the huge television monies have distorted the finances of the game with more and more going to the few.
According to you it is. You have already written him off. Remember, he hasn’t won anything.
Who do you have in mind as a replacement?
Juve seem to have magic money to burn and they are dominating Italy so much its hard to judge them the same as the other teams. Plus with that, they can rest players on league games now. 18 points clear with 11 games left, they could lose over half their games and still win the league. I personally think if it is rigged, UEFA need to consider a team that wont join the superleague as winners because at this point teams like Juve and Barca must get bored in their leagues.
Italian football presently not in the rudest of health. If Atletico, not the best of teams from an attacking point of view, can gain a comfortable 2-0 win at home, I can see other sides taking the Turin side to the cleaners.
One suspects it’s Poch’s pivotal final defining season or is it???
Queue us piping arsenal to 4th as they win europa and united win CL from 5th.
I thought from the end of the last round juve will get into the final from Divine intervention (UEFA…) and I thought it would be with City, but now I am torn between Liverpool and Barca meeting them there. You cant expect the same suspects each year, but on the same note, I don’t think UEFA want an English domination.
In truth, if well rested we can recover our form, CL football is still a possibility for next season, though lord knows what our team will be! Chelsea have to visit Liverpool, Man Utd, Everton and Leicester, I believe, and five of Arsenal’s remaining games are away from home (won’t look too good if they go and win at Wolverhampton). We’ve got five games at home and we have to take advantage of that fact and win at Bournemouth.
We used to be good at it, that ended with Sugar onwards.
Yes, at the moment you can’t really see us making a tight game of it at their place. We’d probably have to win the home leg 3-0 (and that’s not too likely!) to have a good chance of advancing, though a 2-0 home win gives us some hope if we could sneak a goal in the away leg. Nothing in our recent displays, however, suggests that we are primed to spring a surprise!
Then this song should cheer you up!

It also means if we dump ourselves out v Citeh that our underfunded overachievers can concentrate on the league points.
By order of the Bald Weirdo…
5 max. Small chance 4th place will miss CL next year if the cards fall that way.
I cant see Chelsea making top 4. Unless they win the ropey. We could actually end up in CL next year by seeing a City vs Liverpool final.
Its not negative its the truth. 0-1 1-3 1-4 last 3 matches.
Well we were going to be brave but then Daniel told us not to be silly.
#itsouryear #entitled #nonsense
Chelsea v Slavia Prague. While the 2 Spanish teams knock each other out and either Benfica and Eintracht will go out. Tailor made for Chelscum.
Missing the Cheltenham Gold Cup for the first time in 20 yrs having a small flutter on last years winner Native River (Richard Johnson).
Gold Cup: 3.30 pm
Man City to beat Barca or lose to Liverpool in the final. We’re due a win over City so might win home leg but difficult to see us coming out on top over two matches.
Mirror, according to BBC, have stated that Man Utd have got the green light to sign Toby for 26 million.
We must be brave .
Liverpool have it easy this round. Hopefully they’ll get spanked by Barca in the semi
I’m sure Baldy will be gutted we didn’t draw Barca to give the new gaff the best global interest.
If indeed we even play there this season.
It was fun while it lasted. I’ll ban myself from listening to any Oasis for month.
Too true! Agree with the sentiments. After this season, and in the seasons to come, it’s likely the only places in London where it’ll be possible to see Champions League football will be Stamford Bridge and The Emirates.
We will lose by a cricket score at their joint
I said City Juve final…that wont happen, however you have say Liverpool got another favourable draw…
I don’t think we can beat City, I know that is negative, but current form, and historical record, neither lend themselves to us beating them over 2 legs. I then think Juve will beat City in the Semi and face Barca in the final.
Only chance we have is if by some miracle Poch gets absolutely everything right on the night with his selection and tictacs and Tin tin suddenly not only can be arsed but somehow plays out of his skin, as does Dele, Hk and everyone else and under the lights of the new gaff we manage to do a Dortmund first leg on them and then go up there to hold on for a dortmund second leg plus. Clutching at straws but that’s the only way i see us going through and overall i put our chances at one in four at best.
The only place to watch CL in London Daniel? Well most likely for only one night where we get our pants pulled down. Nothing further until you sell up. Cunt.
ENIC OUT.
Shit – Just realised a silver lining….!! Arsenal and Chelsea doing well in ropey, and City and Liverpool looking good for semi’s if not final… would that be 6 spots to English clubs?
Some teams are good at winning cups. Some aren’t.
