Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as a serious contender in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, a highly regarded young talent at the London club.
Talks between Tottenham and Chelsea have reportedly taken place in the past regarding a potential move for the player.
According to Graeme Bailey, Chelsea would be open to selling Gallagher if their asking price of £50 million is met.
However, the hefty price tag makes the deal seem unlikely, and Bailey believes that no club, including Tottenham, would be willing to pay such a fee for the midfielder.
Speaking to the Talking Transfers Podcast, he said:
“Chelsea are, I wouldn’t say they are open to it, but if someone is willing to pay £50m for Conor Gallagher they’re willing to sell.
“That is the word we’re hearing. I don’t think Gallagher is busting a gut to get out at the moment, but with the clubs linked he probably fancies Tottenham, from what we’re hearing, but Tottenham aren’t paying £50m for Conor Gallagher, nobody is.”
While Tottenham may be in need of another midfielder, especially considering the potential departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, they also have pressing issues to address in their central defense.
Instead of spending £50 million on Gallagher, they could consider investing in a top-class center-back to partner with Cristian Romero.
Given the current financial climate and the value associated with Gallagher, it appears that a move to Tottenham for the young midfielder may be challenging to materialise.
The £50 million asking price remains a significant hurdle to overcome.
