Rob Draper for the Daily Mail has composed a detailed report that outlines a number of solutions to what is just one of the myriad problems facing football’s top-flight chiefs, in England and beyond.
The principle takeaways are that the halting of the season has caused a tonne of debt, as broadcasters have paid the Premier League for a product that obviously cannot be delivered right now.
It looks like the original big number of £762million could be heavily bartered down and the EPL final total refund might be as low as £150million. Remember, customers “paused” their subscriptions in swathes soon after the full consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. Leaving most partner relationships involved safely in “fair exchange is no robbery” territory.
Nevertheless, the plan with the remaining 45 of the 2019/20 season games at this stage, is to eventually/hopefully play them behind closed doors and to broadcast all of those games, even if the kick-offs were at 3 o’clock.
Looking further ahead, when the next season starts, it has been mooted that broadcasters could also avail of extra games, in order to boost business, after what has become the toughest of sport famines.
