PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn appears to have bolted into London displaying all the poor grace that Robbie Keane displayed when he bolted out of capital, once an opening in Merseyside appeared for him.
The whole thing is a mess, judging by reports in the boy’s native press. Phraseology such as “PSV on fire” and the player being described as “mutinous” in the Eindhoven Dagblad.
Then there was am Instagram video* to PSV fans assuring them that the 22-year-old had actually been allowed to miss a game and to speak meet with Spurs, De Telegraaf quote the lad as saying, “I had permission from Ernest Faber not to play.”
The paper also say that the kid’s agents were over last week to meet with Mr Levy.
OPINION
£30million is the mooted fee and frankly, that doesn’t get one much in 2020. We need another striker and I hope to be proved wrong in my feeling that Bergwijn isn’t quite that. Here I asked if the boy was a straightforward frontman – as we already have plenty of “attackers”.
My question is straightforward. “Is this a player José asked for, or is this a player Levy has offered José, in the place of nothing at all?”
My hunch is the latter, and if that’s the case, then Mourinho is no less handicapped than Pochettino was.
*This blog isn’t posting this video on the grounds that Bergwijn can’t stop fidgeting throughout and someone will end up suing me for inducing motion sickness.
A lot of their players are saying hes their best and an opponent has come out and said it’s good for them hes going for same reason
I thought Poch wanted him, in the summer.
Heartbreaking this, CFC being offered the Pole.
Mourinho was a better front for Amazon.
De Telegraaf say Bergwin met with Levy and Jose. Perhaps Jose has used this deal to leverage a key forward?
I guess. Just frustrating because I thought the club would make a slight U-turn, but again it has been quite deflating.
Yep, he knows Bergwin is young and talented and hopefully can be sold for a profit.
I think you mean signing Mourinho was good for business(ENIC) but supporting the football team is not part of the deal.
Nailed it.
This bargain basement, barrel scraping deal has Levy stamped all over it. I even doubt a top Championship side would look at him.
A very pertinent question! Ironical also, as it is seemingly about the one position we don’t need to strengthen, as Bergwijn is primarily a wide man/winger rather than a central striker.
I am sure none of us have any objections to strengthening the squad and the boy is clearly a talented young player, but it seems strange that he basically fits the profile of what we already have in Son and Lucas and is not a genuine replacement/back-up to Harry.
Having said that, I would presume that Mourinho has approved the purchase, but whether he originated the idea is another question entirely. I would be surprised if that was the case, when for only 15 million more we could be in for Bruno Fernandez.
I’m no expert on the kid, but looking at the PSV side, they have another attacker, Donyell Malen, who scores considerably more goals…
Taking a pragmatic approach to buying players has proved it is not getting us anywhere. Signing Jose was a statement that we mean business, but it seems that the manager signing is not reflecting the transfer window.
The manager at Spurs never gets the players he wants to enable the team to win trophies. The list of players that previous managers requested but were denied as our beloved chairman bought his own bargain basement selections is too long to be repeated. Levy is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.
