Barcelona looking to hijack Tottenham’s move for main Serie A target

Barcelona has emerged as competition for Tottenham in their bid to sign Cristian Romero this summer.

Tottenham have been in talks with Atalanta over landing the Copa America winner before this transfer window closes.

The Italians signed him on loan from Juventus last summer and have the option of making the transfer permanent for around £14m.

They are asking Tottenham to pay £51m, while the Lilywhites is looking to do a deal for around £42m for the 23-year-old.

As Tottenham struggles to get the deal over the line, Sportitalia via The Daily Mail claims that Barcelona is now interested in a move for him.

The report says the Catalans are looking to hijack the move after watching him impress at the Copa America.

Atalanta is reportedly happy to have another club vying for his signature because it would drive up his transfer fee.

However, in a boost to Tottenham’s chances of signing him, the report claims Barcelona’s financial struggles means it is very unlikely that they would have the money to get the transfer sorted.

They need to offload some of their current players to compete with Spurs and that gives the Lilywhites the chance to complete the transfer.
