Tottenham Hotspur are currently pushing for a place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
The North London outfit are currently fifth in the league table and they will be hoping to finish the season strongly and secure their place in the Premier European competition for the next season.
However, former Arsenal star Paul Merson has revealed that Aston Villa are more likely to finish in the top four and Tottenham are expected to miss out.
Merson believes that Tottenham’s attacking approach could be their undoing this season. The North London outfit have employed a free-flowing attacking system this season and they have garnered a lot of plaudits with their performances.
However, their attacking approach leaves them vulnerable defensively at times and it has led to them dropping crucial points in some matches. Merson believes that they are too open at the back and that could cost them dearly.
“I think Manchester United are a million miles off the race for a top-four spot at the moment, so it’s between Tottenham and Villa,” said Merson on Sportskeeda.
“At the moment, I think I’ll go for Villa to secure UEFA Champions League football next season as Spurs are too open at the back for my liking.”
Previously, former defender William Gallas also suggested that Tottenham need to be a bit more pragmatic. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham decide to change their playing style slightly in order to tighten up defensively. There is no doubt that they have been vulnerable at the back recently, and the defeat against Wolves clearly exposed their frailties.
Tottenham must improve defensively if they want to secure Champions League qualification. Missing out on a top four finish would be a devastating blow.
