Paul Merson has taken a dig at Ange Postecoglou after his remarks about winning silverware at Tottenham following their defeat to Arsenal.
Ange Postecoglou managed to secure a fifth-place finish with Tottenham in his first season in charge. While they missed out on a Champions League spot by the smallest of margins, the attacking and attractive brand of football gave the Spurs fans a lot of hope. Having spent a significant amount on player transfers, they were expected to take the next step this season.
Unfortunately, things haven’t gone according to plan as they have only won one out of their first four league outings. They have dominated the proceedings in all of their fixtures but haven’t been clinical enough. Despite having more of the ball and creating more chances against Arsenal, Tottenham ended up suffering a defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals.
Despite the loss in the derby, Postecoglou came out firing in his press conference and Paul Merson picked up on the chance to take a dig at the former Celtic boss.
The Australian manager said: “I will correct myself: I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed.
On the back of the Tottenham boss’ comments, Merson responded with a cheeky dig while speaking on Sky Sports: “I like Ange, I like him, but I have got more chance of winning Strictly.”
“I’ve got more chance of winning Strictly” 😅

While Postecoglou seems confident about turning things around and securing Tottenham’s first major silverware, Merson doesn’t really have the same opinion. He feels Spurs don’t really have what it takes to win a major title this season. He joked about him having a better chance of winning the Strictly Come Dancing competition than Postecoglou’s men lifting a major title in the 2024/25 season.
Merson might have downplayed Tottenham’s chances of winning something important but they can surely aim for cup title. The North London club have been playing an impressive brand of football, if they can be a bit more clinical in the final third things could change quickly.
