Arrests For Online Racism After Man Utd Game Shows Millennials Mostly Responsible

A dozen men have been arrested or questioned under caution after a series of racist online abuse was targeted by the Metropolitan Police. The action was prompted by events surrounding the Manchester United vs Tottenham match on Sunday 11 April. It would appear that much of the nasty stuff was aimed in particular at Tottenham’s Heung-min Son after Spurs lost the game 3-1.

Hopefully, the investigations can be concluded swiftly, and these people get the message that what they did will not be tolerated in the 21st century. What is of note, however, is the age profile, and to a lesser although not inconsequential degree, the geographic locations.

Of the 12, 8 were what are referred to as ‘generation Y’ which are those born roughly between 1980 and 1994 – Millennials. 4 of the 12 reside in Wales.

As Denzel Washington said, ‘it starts in the home’. So perhaps if you’re the parent of someone who has entered their second decade on this planet, you might want to check that you haven’t brought up someone who the police would probably like to talk to.

Mind how you go.
