Ange Postecoglou strengthens confidence in out-of-form player by including him in Tottenham’s leadership group

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has officially been added to the club’s leadership group, as reported by Alasdair Gold.

Manager Ange Postecoglou has expanded the team’s leadership core, which includes captain Son Heung-min, vice-captains Cristian Romero, and James Maddison, by bringing Vicario into the fold.

Since joining the club last season, Vicario has made a strong impression both on and off the pitch.

His commanding presence and leadership abilities have stood out, with Postecoglou particularly valuing players who demonstrate responsibility and character.

Gold informed that Vicario’s inclusion is part of Postecoglou’s strategy to reshape the culture at Tottenham and foster a more cohesive and united squad.

Vicario’s personal journey, overcoming various challenges throughout his career, has earned him the respect of his teammates and solidified his role within the squad. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold remarked:

“I understand that over the summer, Vicario was added to the team’s leadership group. You might remember Spurs always had this leadership group in the past which all of the players since have left.

“So obviously, all of those players have moved on now, and you’ve got Son, Maddison and Romero. And from what I understand, officially Vicario was added to that in the summer to make up a fourth member because he is seen as a leader and he speaks very clearly and the players listen to him when he talks.

“He is a big voice in that dressing room, and he’s someone who’s been through a struggle, a battle in his career, and I think Postecoglou loves those kinds of players.”

On the pitch, Vicario has been a key player for Spurs since his debut in the 2023-24 Premier League opener against Brentford. His performances in goal have been exceptional, earning him multiple nominations for Save of the Month and culminating in the prestigious Goalkeeper of the Year award at the London Football Awards in February this year.

While his performances this season have not replicated his outstanding form last campaign, he remains a key part of Ange’s side and the Australian’s decision to add him to the leadership group shows that.

His ability to lead by example, both as a player and as a figure in the dressing room, will be crucial to Tottenham’s ambitions this season.
