Ange Postecoglou reveals Tottenham made U-turn on transfer strategy after being ‘impressed’ by two players

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has shared that the standout performances of new signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall were key factors in the club’s decision not to pursue additional midfielders during the summer transfer window.

In a recent press conference before Spurs’ match against Newcastle, Postecoglou highlighted that both Gray and Bergvall have demonstrated exceptional maturity and preparedness.

This gave the coaching staff confidence that further midfield signings were unnecessary.

Gray, who joined from Leeds United for a reported £40 million, and Bergvall, who signed from Sweden on a five-year deal for £8.5 million, have both made an impressive start to their Tottenham careers.

Their strong showings in training and in early matches convinced Postecoglou that the midfield was already in good shape.

Postecoglou noted that while the primary focus during the transfer window was to strengthen the attack, the emergence of Gray and Bergvall reinforced the club’s belief in the depth and quality of their current squad.

The Australian coach pointed out that had these two players not performed as well as they did, Tottenham might have considered further signings, but their impact made such moves unnecessary.

As quoted by Football.London, Postecoglou said:

“I’m not surprised [in how ready they are] as you keep an open mind. You just don’t know. Lucas had been playing in Sweden. Archie played a full season in the Championship.

“I’ve been really impressed with both guys, more the way they have handled things and their maturity.

“We may have gone a bit stronger in a different area if both of those guys didn’t work out, but it wouldn’t have been a major shift from what we have already done.

“Our main focus this window was around the front third, to make sure we bolstered that and I think we have got some good outcomes. Those two guys just further reinforce the areas we were okay in anyway.”

Both Gray and Bergvall have already made appearances as substitutes in Tottenham’s Premier League games this season, indicating their potential to play a significant role in the team’s campaign.

As the season moves forward, Spurs will aim to build on the foundation laid by these promising young talents, with Postecoglou confident in the squad’s capability to compete at the highest levels.
