Ange Postecoglou believes there’s ‘always an opportunity’ for Tottenham Hotspur to win this season’s EFL Cup but is wary of the ‘decent teams’ still in the competition.
Spurs put in an impressive performance to beat Manchester City 2-1 at home on Wednesday, with goals from Timo Werner and Pape Sarr booking their place in the quarter-finals.
Up next is another difficult home test, this time to Manchester United, with the quarter-final clash scheduled for Tuesday, December 17th.
Until then, Tottenham must focus on Premier League and Europa League duties, with some difficult matches to come against the likes of Aston Villa, AS Roma, Man City and Chelsea.
Ange Postecoglou rates Spurs’ EFL Cup chances
Spurs are without major silverware since the last time they won the EFL Cup back in 2008, losing two further finals in the competition since then, as well as the 2019 Champions League final.
Postecoglou was asked on Wednesday if knocking out City had blown the competition ‘wide open’ for Spurs.
“Are you suggesting the sides left are easy?” the Australian bluntly responded after the match (via Football.London).
When asked about the potential ‘opportunity’ that lies in front of them, Postecoglou continued: “There’s always an opportunity if you keep winning. But as I say, there are still some decent teams in there.
“It’s not really the quarter-final stage. But for us, what’s important is we’re in it. As long as we stay in it, we’ve [got] a chance.”
Wednesday’s win came at a cost, with Postecoglou forced to give fitness updates on Micky van de Ven, Timo Werner and Cristian Romero.
Up next for the Lilywhites is a vital Premier League clash with Aston Villa at home on Sunday before they travel to Galatasaray in the Europa League.
