Tottenham Hotspur’s superb 4-1 victory over Aston Villa was marred by potential injuries to Cristian Romero and Richarlison, both of whom had to leave the field early.
While the win demonstrated Spurs’ quality, the possible loss of key players leaves manager Ange Postecoglou with some pressing lineup challenges as they prepare for the demanding fixture schedule ahead.
The match itself saw Tottenham initially go down after Morgan Rogers put Villa in the lead with a goal from a corner. However, the home side turned the tide in the second half.
Recently returned from injury, Heung-min Son made a critical contribution by delivering an inch-perfect cross to set up Brennan Johnson’s equaliser.
Dominic Solanke then put the Lilywhites firmly in control, scoring twice in quick succession to turn the game around. Finally, James Maddison capped off the victory in stoppage time with a lovely free-kick.
Tottenham secure massive win but at the expense of fresh injury crisis
Despite the emphatic win, Spurs’ celebrations were cut short by injury concerns. Romero, who had been solid in defence, appeared to suffer a foot injury around the 60-minute mark and was replaced by Ben Davies.
Romero’s potential absence could add strain to a backline already missing Micky van de Ven, who is expected to be out for a month after sustaining a hamstring injury vs Manchester City.
Richarlison also added to Tottenham’s injury concerns. Subbed on for Son early in the second half, he played a pivotal role by assisting Solanke’s second goal but appeared to strain his hamstring in the process, forcing an early substitution in the 82nd minute with Maddison taking his place.
Addressing these injuries post-match, Postecoglou confirmed Richarlison felt a hamstring strain while Romero had taken a knock.
He acknowledged the need to rely on squad depth to weather the potential absences.
He said (as quoted by by The Standard):
“Richarlison felt his hamstring and Romero got a knock.”
“We just have to deal with what we have to deal with. We have guys who can come in and were going to need that.”
With Spurs now only two points behind fourth-place Chelsea, they remain focused on building momentum while navigating these new injury setbacks.
