An Extension Of Aurier’s Contract Could Only Be Viewed As Sabotage

By The Boy -

Serge Aurier’s time at Tottenham is surely coming to a close. Against the notoriously poor Bournemouth the 27-year-old attempted to cross the ball on 10 occasions, and only twice did the ball find a Spurs player.

Mindless crossing versus Bournemouth last night

The Ivorian’s overall passing accuracy was 77%, which for a right back again, isn’t good enough.

One dribble attempted – failed. One long pass attempted – failed. Loose balls and defensive duels, both 50/50.

Recently, Le10Sport had linked Aurier with a contact extension (his current deal expires in 2022), allegedly driven with the support of Jose Mourinho, but surely there is no way such an unreliable player could be such a mainstay of the Spurs side?

Mourinho’s right back dilemma has now hit a crisis point. Kyle Walker-Peters was felt to be too ineffectual, and yet the Southampton fans appear to have taken rather a shine to the boy.

What grates about Spurs – in this instance and numerous is the absence of succession planning. There’s always a gaping hole in the Tottenham squad that everybody saw coming.

Agreed. I do think any decent team with a modicum of stability would have got in to the top 4 this year. We’ve been awful and could have got 4th only a few games ago, which doesn’t make sense, unless the quality of the league is a fascade. Leicester, Chelsea and Utd have hardly been the epitome of consistency. It was similar last year, we scraped in to the top 4 and needed a massive boost in the transfer window to help us this year. Ndombele wasn’t enough, even if he’d had a good season. Levy has mismanaged the football side of things for years and now we are paying for it.

The striking thing for me in the graphic above is the number of negative or backward passes. But he is not alone in this as can be seen from the way Winks,Davies,Sissoko and Dier,in particular, use the ball.Is it any wonder we take an age to progress into the opposition half and why Kane ends up in our half more than their’s.

There’s a key painful truth in here… KWP wasn’t good enough for a top 4 side. But we’re not. And looking at Leicester’s improvement this season and United’s since the restart we, even taking this as a worst-case-scenario year might only just scrape sixth. Maybe KWP is good enough given that the alternative is Aurier.

You could say signing Aurier in the first place was tantamount to an act of sabotage. It didn’t take a football genius to see he’d be a liability, but at half the price of the Kyle Walker fee the narrative was ‘good business’, ‘a Levy masterstroke’.

I wish I could find a link to the profile of Aurier that Alasdair Gold published before we signed him. It indicated a talented but impetuous player who’d burn’t a lot of bridges, and was now deemed damaged goods by all and sundry, who’d washed their hands of him.

Taming Aurier was always going to be a miracle too far for Poch, but people thought he could turn water into wine back then.

KWP was allowed to fester in the U23s when he should have gone out on loan 3-4 years ago. Look at Rose, amongst the worse Spurs players before going to Sunderland. On his return, he was dynamite. You learn more as a young pro by playing against proper football players than by training and having games v academy graduates. KWP didn’t look good enough for a top 4 side when he started the season, but we aren’t. Tanganga getting injured put us in the mire and KWP might have stepped up for us instead of Southampton. I heard yesterday Aurier is the only Spurs player to play every game under Mourinho. Let that sink in. We should be looking at who to bring in with a plan, but we should be planning a mass clear out too.

I assume Mourinho’s judgement of KWP, having seen him up close is correct. It’s unfair to judge a player over one or two games however well or bad he plays. Maybe his physical size is against him. Hope he does well and proves that judgement wrong.

Where do fans stand on Walker-Peters over Aurier? I watched KWP against City the other day and he looked at the very least, ‘solid’. Is he really that bad that he just looks good in that company and actually he is still a worse option that Aurier? I just can’t see it. I don’t understand why we can’t give him a run of games – but Jose seems happy to let him go. Not saying that either is a solution long-term but for now, one has to be more of a solution than the other – and I’m not sure that that is Aurier anymore.

Would not be surprised if Aurier got a new contract, because it all comes down to money. It’s cheaper to keep him than to buy a quality replacement. That’s why we have hung onto players past their sell by dates. Vertonghen, Toby, Lloris, Eriksen, Dembele, Wanyama, Davies, Trippier, Rose etc were all bought at bargain prices and now the cost of replacing them all at once, because they have all grown old together and because transfer windows were missed, the cost has sky rocketed. That’s why Toby who is in decline was given a new contract, too expensive to replace. That’s why Lloris will be here for another three years. That’s why a clapped out Lamela is still here. That’s why Davies a Championship level player will be here next season. That’s why we have Gedson and Man United have Bruno Fernandes. That’s why Liverpool have Mane and we have Moura. That’s why Man United have Mason Greenwood and we have Troy Parrot.

The fans know more about the abilities of the players and where recruitment is necessary. We have known that having sold Walker and Trippier that we needed a new RB. We know that Ben Davies isn’t good enough as first team LB and that Danny Rose , once valued at £50 mill and now set to leave for £5 mill, had deteriorated beyond all recognition. We’ve known that we needed a DM for some time , and nobody understands why Dembele was sold half way through the season. Most importantly, we have know for years that Kane needed a decent back up to avoid him being run into the ground. We must be one of the only teams in Europe who only have one striker on their books. Despite the fans being aware of these requirements, there is no joined up thinking by our board to implement a proper transfer strategy with some semblance of forward thinking. If only our beloved CEO could pause from counting the loo rolls in the executive bathrooms for a moment, and realise he needs to implement a root and branch reform of the way we do our recruitment as Liverpool did. Sadly, twenty years of Levy does not fill anyone with confidence. Our problems are all of his making. Sack the CEO who is an incompetent football administrator.
