Alasdair Gold believes Jose Mourinho was right in pointing out the gap in academy talent at Tottenham.

The North London club have made a poor start to the new season as they have only won one out of their first three league games. Apart from their performances on the pitch, their Europa League squad has raised a few major question marks over their management.

Spurs were forced to announce a 23-man squad for the European competition in place of a full 25-man squad as they do not have enough homegrown players. While the majority of their stars made the cut, Djed Spence was left out despite impressing during pre-season.

Alasdair Gold believes Tottenham’s poor management has led to such a situation and he even highlighted that former boss Jose Mourinho had pointed it out a few years back while speaking on the Gold & Guest podcast.

Gold said on his podcast: “Jose Mourinho pointed out a few years back, didn’t he? He said there was this gap in the players coming through from the academy.

“He was looking down at that point. It was to the likes of Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett back then who were like, I think they were both sixteen at the time.

“He was saying there was no little kind of middle section coming through. And he’s been proved absolutely right because no one’s come through to fill that void.”

The Portuguese manager had made it quite clear during his time at the North London club that there was a gap in the players coming through their academy. While they had the likes of Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett, the duo were 16 and there were not enough good options who could help out the first team.

It has been over three years since Mourinho parted ways with the club but nothing much has changed, they only have two homegrown players in their current first-team squad and both are goalkeepers. The fact that they do not have much quality coming through their academy has affected Ange Postecoglou’s team as he was forced to leave Djed Spence out of the Europa League squad.
