Agbonlahor urges Tottenham to ‘go and get’ 27-year-old star in January

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

The 27-year-old is currently suspended for breaching gambling regulations but he will return to action in January and a host of clubs are looking at securing his services during the winter transfer window.

Clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham are reportedly keen on signing the Premier League striker and former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has revealed that Tottenham should look to go and sign him.

Tottenham have started the season in fine form and they are currently the league leaders. They will look to challenge for the league title and someone like Toney could make a big difference in the second half of the campaign.

Tottenham sold Harry Kane during the summer transfer window and they have decided not to bring in a direct replacement during the summer window. However, it is evident that they need a reliable finisher to support Son Heung-min.

Richarlison has not been able to live up to the expectations and Toney would be an upgrade on the Brazilian.

He said on talkSPORT: “No one will be able to afford [Oshimen], he’ll be something silly, £140/150million.

“But, do Spurs go and get Toney? If Spurs come to January and they’re in a title race… What if [Heung-min] Son got injured, touch wood it doesn’t happen, or [James] Maddison, what then?

“You’ve got Richarlison, he can’t score, the young lad  Johnson will do OK. I think whoever’s serious about this title challenge, go and get Toney.”

The 27-year-old will be tempted to join Tottenham if there is a concrete proposal on the table and it would be a major step up in his career.

Spurs are likely to return to the UEFA Champions League next season if they continue to perform at this level and it remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy is prepared to loosen the purse strings in January and reinforce the squad.

Arsenal will be keen on the striker as well especially with Gabriel Jesus failing to score on a consistent basis. It remains to be seen whether Spurs can beat their bitter London rivals and secure his signature in the coming months.

On Arsenal’s interest, he Agbonlahor added: “Gabriel Jesus, good on the ball, good at linking but he’s not strong enough holding the ball up, he’s not getting into the spots where you get tap-ins, he’s not going to get those headers as well. So I think Ian Wright is totally right, whoever is serious about the title in January, go get him.”
