Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
The 30-year-old Senegal international is reportedly unhappy with the lack of game time at Stamford Bridge and the player was recently offered to Tottenham Hotspur.
Journalist Simon Phillips has now revealed to GiveMeSport that the 30-year-old is unhappy with manager Graham Potter who has decided to use Kepa Arrizabalaga as his first-choice goalkeeper this season.
He said: “On Mendy, I’m told he hasn’t rejected a new contract offer at the moment because there hasn’t actually been a formal offer made from Chelsea. All it was, was back in the summer, Chelsea and Mendy spoke about potentially extending his contract.
“This was obviously before Potter came in, and then he decided that Kepa was his number one. Since then, Mendy has grown unhappy, he doesn’t want to be a backup, he wants to be the number one, and the doubts have come in.”
Potter prefers a keeper with better distribution skills and the Spaniard is certainly much more composed on the ball as compared to Mendy.
The Senegal international managed to establish himself as a key player under former manager Thomas Tuchel and he played a key role during Chelsea’s Champions League winning campaign.
It will be interesting to see if Potter is willing to give him an extended run in the side during the second half of the season.
Mendy has reportedly spoken to Chelsea regarding a potential extension but he is not willing to be a backup option for Kepa. The player could look to move on in search of regular game time if things do not change at Stamford Bridge. It will be interesting to see if Spurs take up the option to sign the 30-year-old at the end of the season.
The Londoners could use an experienced keeper like him, especially with Hugo Lloris on the decline.
The French international has not been at his best this season and Spurs have been linked with a number of potential replacements.
Mendy is well-settled in the Premier League and he could come in and make an immediate impact at Tottenham.
